Natural Cures And Home Remedies For Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is one of the first signs of pregnancy. According to a Charlotte clinic, about 75% of all pregnant women have to deal with morning sickness every day through the pregnancy period.  While morning sickness might not be harmful to the unborn child and the mother, it is never a pleasant feeling. Health experts and researchers believe morning sickness is caused by increased sensitivity of the digestive system, a heightened sense of smell, as well as pregnancy hormones surges in the body.

Although morning sickness might be inevitable to many, you don’t necessarily have to deal with it all the time.  There are plenty of natural home remedies that do help suppress the condition, thus making it possible to wake up in the morning with little to no nausea. Some of the natural cures for morning sickness are discussed below.

1. Ginger Root for Morning Sickness

Ginger root is one of the most preferred natural home remedies for nausea. According to research, ginger contains compounds that have an almost similar effect as anti-nausea medications. The best thing with ginger is that it is 100% natural. This means you won’t be pumping toxins and chemicals into your body in the name of fighting nausea. For the best results, consider taking a cup of warm ginger tea just before going to bed and immediately after waking up.  The compound should help sooth the stomach thus reducing effects of nausea and vomiting. It is also recommended for those undergoing chemotherapy as well.

2. Bananas to Avoid Nausea

Bananas are a good source of potassium and vitamin B6 among other essential nutrients. These compounds are necessarily required to keep nausea in check. Potassium plays a critical role in maintaining electrolyte and fluid balance in the body. Having a banana every day if pregnant or undergoing chemotherapy would, therefore, be a wise idea. If you aren’t particularly fond of bananas, try having smaller portions of the same – to train your body into liking it.

3. Fresh Lemons Help with Early Pregnancy

Fresh lemons are a good home remedy for morning sickness. The fresh scent produced by lemons alone has a calming effect that comes in handy in the morning.  The fresh lemon scent, and taking a warm cup of lemon water can also help reduce nausea. It would, however, be advisable to try small amounts of the lemon water if heartburn is an issue. Be sure to use fresh lemons to treat morning sickness too. The fresh lemon juice packs vitamins and other compounds that help soothe your tummy as well as balance out electrolytes.

4. Exercise Throughout Pregnancy

Health experts recommend putting in some form of exercise especially when pregnant. Exercising gets the blood moving, and also facilitates removal of toxic compounds from the body. In addition to this, regular exercise enables the body to cope well with the hormone influx in the body. You don’t have to go to the gym to fight off nausea. Simple physical activities such as walking, jogging, or even taking a couple of stairs should help keep the body system in check. You should be able to wake up the following morning feeling rejuvenated and very little nausea.

5. Aromatherapy to Treat Morning Sickness

Most pregnant women have a heightened sense of smell. Most scents will be overwhelming leading to vomiting among other side effects. Aromatherapy with just the right ingredients can, however, help reduce the effects of nausea and morning sickness. Orange, lemon, and peppermint scents are mostly recommended for individuals suffering from nausea. Peppermint, for example, has a soothing effect on everyone. Inhaling the scents should help alleviate nausea hence making you feel better afterward. If possible, consider adding peppermint essential oil in your oil diffuser.

6. Grapefruit to Relieve Nausea

Grapes are some of the richest and most nutritious fruits you can have. They contain phytonutrients, fiber, and other compounds that promote digestive health. Studies show that munching on grapefruit in the morning can help alleviate the symptoms of morning sickness for several hours. That said, having grapefruits within your reach could see you spend a day or two without worrying about nausea. In addition to this, grapes are delicious and contain relatively good amounts of dietary fiber. These come in handy in not only alleviating nausea but promoting digestive health.

7. Drink More Water Every Day

Health experts advise us to drink at least seven glasses of water every day.  Pregnant mothers and those undergoing chemotherapy should, however, take even more water to help keep a healthy balance of electrolytes. Water is essentially required as the volume of blood increases over time. That said, taking a warm glass of water in the morning is crucial in fighting nausea and morning sickness. You also need to drink plenty of water to replace the fluids you might be losing from the symptoms of morning sickness.

The home remedies outlined above have several things in common.  They are 100% natural and most importantly, help the body cope with the hormonal changes.  Although you might be tempted to use anti-nausea medication to treat morning sickness, using natural methods to treat the same is much safer.  Be sure to try this before using any other type of medication to treat nausea.
