If you frequently watch interior design shows, you may think that designing a house to become a home is so effortless. Unfortunately, the reality is far different from that. Designing a home involves a lot of things and can get overwhelming at times. Below are some interior design tips for beginners to make the entire process smooth and be happy with the final results.

1. Choose Your Style

Before anything else, select a décor style for your house. There are several décor styles, such as vintage, contemporary, industrial, mid-century modern, and farmhouse home décor. Each of these styles comes with different design elements color palettes, among other aspects. You can choose a particular style and use it for decorating the entire home instead of using a different style for each room. That way, there will be a harmonious feel in your home.

2. Create A Focal Point

Each room in your house should have a focal point. A focal point is an attractive piece that draws attention. There can be more than one focal point. However, don’t create very many as they can make a home feel overpowering. If your home has a big feature such as a fireplace or a built-in bookcase, it automatically becomes a focal point. You can also create one by adding a piece of art, painting a particular wall a different color from others, installing shelves, and placing accessories on them.

3. Don’t Throw in A Lot of Colors

As much as you may want to include all the colors you love in your home, you can end up overdoing it and ruining everything. You don’t have to paint each room a different color. Choose three or four colors and use them throughout the house for better results. Doing that creates a cohesive feel.

4. Pay Key Attention to Lighting

You can design your home perfectly, but everything will be ruined without proper lighting. Before buying any lighting material, consider every room’s needs. For example, the kitchen needs very bright lights since many tasks are carried out there. Such kind of lighting is not suitable for the bedroom. Some of the lighting options you can consider are overhead lighting, accent lighting, floor lamps, and natural light. Painting the walls white is another way of adding more light in a dark space.

5. Let The Furniture Breath

You might have the urge to incline furniture on the walls for different reasons, such as maximizing space. Unfortunately, doing so makes a home feel flat. The best thing to do is pull the furniture away from the wall, even if it’s just for a few centimeters.

6. Don’t Forget to Get Some Art Displays

Pieces of art make perfect decorations for empty walls. And you don’t have to be art savvy to decorate your home with pieces of art. Start with selecting pieces of art that resonate with your personality. You can hang a large piece of art on a wall if it’s spacious enough or create a gallery wall. Avoid overcrowding pieces of art and placing very small pieces on large walls to ensure your space doesn’t look awkward.

7. Add Live Plants to Add More Life in Your Home

You can never go wrong with plants when designing your home. Plants make a home beautiful and serve other purposes, such as purifying indoor air. However, when you include plants as part of your décor, you sign up to taking care of them, or else, they will die. Ensure you know the growth requirements of plants before getting them. For example, if you get a plant that needs ample lighting and place it in a dark room, it will not survive.

Designing a home involves several things and requires proper planning. Using the tips above, you can design your house from scratch or redesign it to achieve your dream home. Interior designing is a process, and you don’t need to do everything at once. You can take a single project at a time.
