How to Reduce Mental Stress - Top 5 Tips

Mental stress can lead to depression and suicidal thoughts if it is not managed properly. There are lots of reasons as to why people could feel mental stress. It could be the result of a difficult job, bullies at school, relationship issues, loneliness, low self-confidence, regret, and a whole list of other reasons. While it is always a good idea to treat the cause of your mental stress, there are ways you can reduce it in the meantime.

Below are 5 tips for reducing mental stress so you can function properly.

1) Darts

Darts is a fun and relaxing game that is sure to take your mind off your problems. You can play this game with your friends and family or by yourself. Be sure to choose a dartboard that is made for amateur players because you don’t want to risk poking yourself with the sharp tip of a dart. Therefore, try purchasing one of the safety dartboards that are available. One good example is the electronic dartboard which has little holes in the board and soft tips on the darts. This will make the darts game completely stress free and will add more entertainment value as well.

2) Exercise

Sometimes it takes physical stress to reduce your mental stress. Exercise is a natural way for the body to relax the brain and the rest of the central nervous system. As you exercise continuously, the pituitary glands in the body release chemicals called endorphins which reduces the feelings of mental stress. The longer you exercise, the longer you will have reduced stress afterward. So, get into the habit of exercising on a regular basis. You could do walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or running. There are many exercise options out there. Just make sure it is cardiovascular exercise.

3) Meditation

Meditation is a practice that has been performed for thousands of years to reduce mental stress and achieve peace of mind. In fact, it is one of the oldest methods of stress relief known to mankind. This is where you sit quietly in silence as you clear your mind of all thoughts and worries. Then, you focus on one positive thought that gives you happiness and pleasure. You continue to do this for as long as you can. Most people will go 30 minutes at a time per day doing their meditation ritual. The more you do this, the less you will worry about problems throughout the day because you will have the skills to clear your mind when you need to.

4) Socialize

A lot of mental stress comes from loneliness or isolation. You need to make sure you’re living a very social life where you have friends to communicate with every day. This doesn’t mean going on Facebook and posting a chat comment to a friend. They need to physically be around you for it to count as a social experience. If you need to go to a social club or group meeting to get this social experience, then go for it. When it comes to things to do with friends, engaging in activities together like outing and game nights are so much fun.

5) No Stimulants

A stimulant is any chemical or substance that increases the activity and function of the central nervous system. The most common stimulants are caffeine, tobacco, sugar, alcohol, and drugs. People like to consume these stimulants because they feel a burst of energy and happiness after taking them. However, this happiness is short lived and is often followed by a central nervous system “crash” where they feel worse than they did before. This turns into feelings of stress which they try to relieve by consuming more stimulants, and that just makes it even worse. The best thing you can do is avoid stimulants all together so your central nervous system is not overstimulated.
