Get the foundations checked
This is especially important if you live in a property that is quite old. Aged houses can often suffer from structural problems – a lot of them caused by rot, or by the unwanted invasion of plants and trees. The foundations of your home can also cause you a number of problems if they have been ill-fitted, or if they are very old. Signs of foundation damage include poor-fitting windows and doors, common water damage and sagging floors. If you choose to ignore any of these situations, you could be putting your family at serious risk of facing a collapse. Always get your foundations checked if you see any of these symptoms, and speak to your insurance company too. Leave it too late, and you may be dealing with a full-scale renovation instead.

Don’t leave plumbing problems to chance
There are actually a lot of DIY solutions to many common plumbing problems, such as clearing a minor clogged drain. For example, you can easily lower the chances of getting frozen pipes during winter by insulating your pipes and boiler at home. But don’t let this fool you into thinking that every single plumbing job you face will be within the realm of your capabilities. There are most definitely some jobs that are best left to the professionals. If you have an uncontrollable leak, your boiler is overheating or you have an issue with your septic tank, it is always best to speak to an expert in plumbing diagnostics.

Sort out any damp in your home
Most homes end up suffering from damp at one time in their lives. This can be a temporary issue caused by a structural fault, or it could be a longer-standing problem caused by poor ventilation. It may not affect your day-to-day life in your home, but damp can be unsightly, it can smell, and ultimately, living with it for too long can make you ill. At the first sign of any damp, do a quick check around your home to see if a leak could be causing it. If not, try some home ventilation techniques to see if that makes any difference. If you still have no luck, consider drafting in the professionals. Damp can severely damage your home, so don’t put yourself and your family at risk.
