How to discover damage to your roof

If you have a house, you probably have to do lots of things yourself. And to be quite honest, this is a much better approach as it allows you to save lots of money.

When it comes to roof, it is a part of your home that constantly needs attending to. The surface is rather big, weather constantly affects it in a negative way, and there are various things that can go wrong. With all that being said, you need to check your roof every year for leakage.

But instead instantly calling a roof company, it’s much better to check it yourself. Who knows, perhaps you can fix it yourself. Of course, before you can do this, you need to know what to look for.

Main considerations

You don’t have to be an expert to understand that if there is water running down your house, you probably have some roof issues. However, while it is rather easy to see the exact spot where the water is falling, tracking the cause is often much harder.

Luckily for you, I am here to help. There are lots of cool tricks that will help you find these problems and patch them up. In most cases, there are one and the same things an as long as you know what to look for, there wouldn’t be any issues.

If the problem is just a standard leak, it is much better to address is immediately. Sometimes, the cause may be severe (for example, you will have to change the whole roof) but you will still at least have to prevent any leakage as it can increase humidity in your home. Depending on an issue, the extent of fixes may be minor or bigger. Keep in mind that increased humidity will lead to mold, rotting of wood, damage to insulation as well as damage to the ceiling.

Of course, things are not always as simple as they seem as all of us have a home budget. This means you will oftentimes have to make sacrifices before going into bigger expenses.

How to find a leak?

As you can presume, the bets ways of finding a leak is you stand just beneath the leak and look upwards. Start by checking whether there is any obvious penetration. In most cases, the roof will be damaged due to an item that has pierced it. The whole section is most likely to be affected in one way or another. In fact, it rarely happens there is a leak where only a minor portion of the roof is affected. When I mention penetration, I mostly refer to roof and plumbing vents, dormers, chimney or something else that goes through the roof.

If you can reach your attic, you might as well consider taking a flashlight and going there. You will notice that stains and there is a good chance that mold has started appearing. If you don’t have access, you will likely have to go to the roof (which is usually better as it gives you a better overview of the whole situation).

Finding tough leaks

Sometimes, it will be rather hard to find damage. In such situations, you will have to ask a friend to help you out. Just go to the roof and bring a hose. Start watering the roof around the suspicious area. Make sure to go slowly as you need to find the exact spot where the issue occurred. Meanwhile, helper will stay inside of the house and wait for dripping to appear. Then, he can yell to notify you when the leak becomes obvious. Mark this area and start checking shingles. If there is something suspicious, it is much better to remove more shingles and be safe than to leave those that are potentially the issue.

With these simple tips, you can easily find any type of damage to your roof and fix it promptly.
