How to Design the Ideal Home Office in 6 Steps

With the Internet offering many employment options, more and more people are practicing working from home. Freelancers and big business entrepreneurs alike are choosing to work from home instead of a corporate office.

But anyone who has ever worked from home knows that simply putting your computer in a corner of a room won’t do. There are too many distractions at home, and if you want to be as productive as possible, you need to have a separate office in your home.

If you are serious about working from home, here are 6 tips to consider when designing your home office.

Pick the Right Spot

Since you will probably be spending at least 8 hours in your home office, you have to make sure the place is comfortable and spacious enough. Also, consider the traffic outside your office and how much will it distract you from work. Also consider that if you are going to have clients coming over, they would not disrupt your family and vice versa. You wouldn’t want your clients to wake up your baby as they pass by to your office every day.

Ideally, you should adapt a room you’re not using like the garage, guest room or the attic, do some remodeling, painting and redecorating and make the most of it. If you are going to use the attic, however, make sure you get a licensed inspector check your roof for any leaks. They might make heating up your office more expensive, and you risk extensive water damage during severe storms.

Plan the Office

Think of all the items you’ll need to work efficiently and comfortably. Start with the HVAC system and the lighting. Make sure you have enough space for your chair to freely move around and make sure the flooring can sustain all that movement. If you have a window, make sure you add some curtains so you can block the sunlight if you need to.

Plan the Work Area

Your desk or other work surface is probably the most important piece of furniture in your home office. This is where you will be spending most of your time, so make sure it has enough space for your computer and other devices like the printer, but also enough room for notebooks and other office supplies.

Comfortable Seating

Since you will be sitting all day, make sure to get a chair that’s comfortable enough. Also, make sure that it provides decent back and arm support and that the height is right or adjustable. If you like to raise your feet up, get a small footstool as well.

Provide Good Lighting

Lighting is important for many reasons, as besides its practical function it can help set the mood in your office. Bad lighting probably means you will yawn a lot more. Similarly, you have to make sure to place the light in front of your monitor so that it doesn’t reflect.

Organize Your Space

Clutter can affect your performance more than you can imagine. That’s why you should make sure your office stays organized. Get rid of any items you don’t need and provide adequate space to store everything else. Consider shelves for any paper documents, printer paper, and books. If there’s not enough room in your home office, you can store some of the items or documents you use less frequently elsewhere.
