Bathroom Renovation Checklist

What do you notice when you walk into your bathroom?

Are you underwhelmed by its plainness? Maybe it reminds you of something from the 90s. Have you been looking at the same view for a decade or two?

Any of these thoughts might lead you to renovate your bathroom. As one of the best home improvement projects for return on investment, a bathroom renovation  can be a good choice.

Let’s look at this bathroom renovation checklist to see what it entails.

1. Set a Budget

Before you get too dazzled by claw tooth bathtubs and shiny marble vanities, sit down and set a realistic budget for your project. Figure out the max amount you want to spend, then plan your project to cost about 10%-20% less than that. You always have to leave room for unexpected expenses.

2. Pick a Design/Theme

Now that you know your price range, you can pick a design or theme for your bathroom. Are you going for a classic or antique look? Sophisticated? Modern?

Whatever you choose, always come back to it as you choose the other elements. This will help you create a cohesive effect.

3. Plan the Layout

Do you want to move stuff around? Just because your toilet has always been in that spot, doesn’t mean it has to stay there. You can also enlarge the bathroom, if building regulations permit, or change the position of elements to make it feel like a new bathroom.

4. Start Demolition

You can’t get started until you get all the old gunk out of the way. It can take a couple of days to demolish a bathroom. Be prepared for dust and noise during this stage.

5. Structural Repair

Your expert bathroom renovator in Adelaide will inspect the structure while the walls are open. Older homes often have water damage or other damages to the structure which they will repair at this point.

6. Wiring and Pipes

Then the electrical and Mason Oh plumbing team will get to work roughing in these systems. Some of the existing systems may be used but some may need to be replaced, particularly if you are moving or adding fixtures.

7. Plasterboard

Time to close up the walls!

8. Waterproof

After this, a special coating will be applied to seal and protect the walls from the moisture in the bathroom.

9. Install the Cabinets

Now the cabinets and storage space can be installed. To save money on the renovation, some homeowners opt to refinish their existing cabinets rather than replace them completely. This isn’t always possible, though.

If you’re buying new cabinets, be sure that they are of good quality and made to be water-resistant.

10. Install the Tile/Flooring

Many homeowners love using tile in the bathroom both as the floor and up the walls. It’s a great way to add colour and the material is perfect for bathroom use. As long as the grout is installed correctly, you have little to worry about from moisture problems and the tile is easy to clean.

11. Install Electrical and Plumbing Fixtures

Nearing the end of the renovation, it’s time to install the outward part of your new electrical and plumbing fixtures.

12. Seal It Up

For the final step, the renovator will seal off edges and cracks with silicone to avoid moisture problems.
