There are many benefits for us when it comes to spending time alone, and if you have got yourself a comfortable place to call home you might be spending more and more time there. Some people might be stuck at home due to the weather or through illness.

With the internet at your fingertips, you should never be stuck without something fun to do at home, and here are just a few ideas to get you started.

Learn a New Skill

With an entire world of learning at your fingertips – and much of it for free – you have the opportunity to get involved in some sort of learning without too much effort or expense.

Firstly, if you want to get ready to become a globetrotter, you might want to learn a new language. There are several resources available for this, but a firm favourite is Duolingo – a smartphone app that is completely free and easy to use.

Why not pick up an instrument? The ukulele is a cheap stringed instrument that you can pick up for less than $50 and there are online classes that you can take to learn. You might have already played an instrument and can get back into it using online resources.

For something a bit more fun, why not learn cocktail making and pretend to be Tom Cruise in Cocktail or get your chef apron on and develop some new cooking skills.

Getting involved in learning a new skill is not only a fantastic way to spend some time but also gets your brain working too – so it’s a win-win!

Gaming

If you have a console at home, you probably already play games to keep yourself occupied – but if you haven’t picked up a controller for a while now is a great time to get involved. Major console manufacturers offer a subscription service which means you can download and play a range of games essentially for free – which is amazing.

If you don’t have a console, then your PC or laptop is ready for all sorts of games. There are simple browser games for immediate play and ones that might require downloading and installing. Everything from simple Solitaire or Mah-jongg to massive multiplayer online role-playing games like Fortnite and World of Warcraft are available – and they are guaranteed to be an excellent distraction.

For a little bit more of an adrenaline rush and the opportunity to win real cash, why not sign up to play online poker? All the fun of the games that you know and love, available in your home. Whether you want to play blackjack or try your luck at slots, there is a game that is perfect for you, and the combination of excitement and the opportunity to win money is great fun.

Workout

Even within the four walls of your home, you can work on your physical and mental health – with a workout.

YouTube is probably the best place to get started on your new health kick, with several channels dedicated to providing free workouts of different types.

You can find cardio and strength workouts that need no equipment, which is perfect for you if you have a limited budget or not much space. These can range from quick 15-minute sessions to full-on hour-long workouts that will get you moving and building muscle and stamina.

If you are looking for something a bit slower-paced and more focused on mindfulness, then there are yoga and Pilates classes that you’ll love. You can even find exciting dance workouts that will have you bopping around your house and getting fit while you have a good laugh.

Working out is good for your physical health, of course,  but the release of endorphins and other hormones is also great for your mental health.

Start a Side Hustle

You might have a hobby already, like knitting or crafting – and you could turn that into a money-making enterprise with just a little bit of planning. Selling to people on Facebook or through Instagram is probably the easiest way to get started but setting up an account on a site like Etsy isn’t particularly complicated. Of course, a website is the ultimate option.

You might have a work-related skill or specialist education that you can use for a side hustle. Marketing experts can share their knowledge as specialists and help small businesses (for a fee), or maybe you could put your writing skills to the test and work for a ghost-writing agency, helping get eBooks published.

Another option that you might be interested in is getting involved with buying and selling stocks online, which you can do quite simply with online brokers. This can tie in to your learning, too, as you can teach yourself how to become a trader.

Don’t be afraid to get stuck into something new – the world is your oyster, even when you are at home.
