3 Tips For Getting Your Kids To Help Around The House

If you have kids, you know that it can be an uphill battle to get them to help with housework and chores. Of course, your children are likely part of the reason your house needs to be cleaned in the first place, so it only makes sense that they should help you with that. Even if you have a house cleaner or get your carpets professionally cleaned, there will still be plenty of upkeep to do in between. If you struggle with keeping your house clean, here are 3 tips to get your kids to help you out with that.

Bribe Them

Some parents are against bribery, but often it is the only thing that works with kids. In order to bribe your kids to help you with cleaning your house, you don’t necessarily have to buy them extravagant gifts or anything of that sort. Tell your children that they can have an extra hour of screen time if they help, or that you’ll cook their favorite meal. It doesn’t have to be something big, but as long as there is some incentive they will be much more inclined to help out. You can also try giving them a weekly or monthly allowance – but only if they complete all of their chores.

Withhold Things

Of course you should never withhold anything important like food or clothing, but withholding small things such as screen time, playtime with friends, or a later bedtime is a great way to get your kids to help you with work around the house. They may not want to clean with you, but if they know that they will have to go to bed early if they don’t they will probably do it anyway! Just make sure the thing you choose to withhold is something they want – but not something that is necessary to their survival.

Don’t Use Chores As A Punishment

Having your kids do chores is completely fine because it is a good way to teach them about the value of hard work and responsibilities. However, chores should never be used as a punishment if they do something wrong. For example, if they get bad grades in school or get into a fight with one of their siblings, cleaning the kitchen should not be their punishment for that. Chores should be things they know they have to do no matter what, regardless of their behavior. This way, they will get into the routine of doing them and may actually end up looking forward to them.

Getting your kids to help around the house may feel impossible, but it doesn’t have to be! Try using these tips and see if they work for your family.
