Lights On or Lights Off

Whether you are in an industrial, office, or home setting, proper lighting makes any kind of work better. As more people are transitioning from office spaces to home workspace, you need to consider specific things and one of these is proper lighting that is light on or lights off when working at home.

Having a workspace is important because you spend a lot of time working from your home. You also need to have good quality lighting in your workplace if you have a separate room for a home office, a cubicle farm, or just in the living room, to increase your work productivity.

Having poor lighting can lower your morale, increase eye stress, headache, reduce your energy, and will ultimately result in low work productivity.

In this article, we will be talking about whether a home office is better with lights on or lights off.

Working at home

Working at home

Whether you are employed and working for a company or working on an online job, you are likely to have an office at home.

Working at home is the same as working in an office building. But the big difference is your environment.

You are with your colleagues when you’re in an office, and the environment lets you focus on your tasks. While at home, you have a much more comfortable feel and relaxed feeling, which makes you less productive.

How your workstation is set up depends on your job or tasks. Apart from the location of your home office, one thing that most people do not consider is how the light is set up.

Light is a big factor because it brings out the energy from you and lets you focus on your specific task. You’ll see in a typical office that it’s always bright, and you can hardly find a no light or dimmed lighted office. On the other hand, working at home allows you to choose the comfortable, practical, or suited lighting that you need.

Here are some advantages and disadvantages of having a home office with the lights on or lights off.

Home office environment

Home office environment

When you are working you will be spending much of your time in your home office and whatever lighting you choose will definitely have an impact on yourself and your work.

Lights on

The advantage of working at home with lights on is it adds better ambiance, is healthier, can improve your work performance and productivity, and can create a work rhythm that ensures you keep up with your working pace.

The disadvantage of working with lights on would fall on the light quality. A dimmed setting can give you a gloomy or depressing feel. The selection of light colors is also a facto. Dark color shades can strain your eyes and can stress you up.

But this isn’t the case for some as others are more accustomed to dim working environments.  Light placement is something that you should also consider. Note that it’s bad lighting when you are facing the light source.

Lights off

The advantage of working when the light is off is you can focus on your computer screen and can have less distraction in your environment.

The disadvantage of working with the lights off is that it is unhealthy, can put stress in your eyes, and you can easily get tired.

It would be like working blindly in your environment because you’ll have difficulty moving as you cannot see what is around you. It will also be difficult when you handle paper documents. This can even cost you more time since you cannot easily read the hard copy documents.

Light location

If you are using a lamp or desk light, it would be best to place it beside your working table but not behind your computer or document.

If you rely on a ceiling light, make sure you place your workstation directly below or slightly behind you, but not too far that you cover the light. The light should be above or level with you depending on the distribution. It should also not be directly in your eyesight.

Light color

Natural light is considered to be the most efficient, productive, and healthiest in a work-home environment. You can also have positive lights such as bright blue, yellow, orange, or white. This will also depend on what type of mood you want to bring out.

Type of lights

Again, natural light will always be better. But if you are working in a place without windows or you are working at night, you need to choose the best light color for your mood and light source.

You can choose from using fluorescent light or led lighting. But in recent years, led light has become more popular since it is a good alternative to fluorescent lights. It’s also more energy-efficient, has a longer lifespan, and can be dimmed depending on the natural light.

Although it is more expensive than your fluorescent light, it can save you more in the longer term.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Lighting is an important factor when you are working at home. It’s all about improving productivity, decreasing eye strain, and having a more comfortable and better working environment.

Remember these factors when setting up your work-at-home environment for you to become more productive.
