When Should You Maintain Your Sump Pump?

You should make sure to put out the effort to maintain your sump pump at least once a year. However, if your home is consistently using a sump pump, you should make sure to check on it several times a year.

During the wintertime is when you should put out the effort to check on your sump pump. This is because springtime is when you’re going to use your sump pump the most often. When the snow begins to melt, there will be an increase in groundwater surrounding your home.

While you can’t predict how the influx of groundwater is going to impact your home, you should have your sump pump ready to operate just in case.

How to Maintain Your Sump Pump

There are several steps that you should take to perform basic sump pump maintenance. Before you begin to perform any maintenance, you’ll need to find the sump pump in your home.

You can do this by finding the lowest point in your home. For many houses, this will be in the crawlspace or basement area of the home. However, you’ll never find a sump pump installed in the attic space or any upper areas of your home.

Step 1

Once locating your sump pump, you should make sure that it’s sitting properly. The vibrations that a sump pump produces will cause it to fall over onto its side. Take a few minutes to check to make sure that it’s upright.

Also, you should make sure that the float ball is moving around easily.

Step 2

Next, you’ll want to take a few minutes to make sure that the sump pump is actually pumping water. Since this is the only function of the sump pump, you’ll need to double-check that it can pump water.

You can check on the sump pump’s pumping abilities by pouring a bucket full of water into the pit of the sump pump. Then you’ll want to turn the sump pump on. Once the sump pump is activated, make sure that water is actually being discharged by the sump pump.

Step 3

After you’ve done these steps, you’ll also want to check the electrical connection for the sump pump. All sump pumps use a GFCI electrical connection. Sometimes, these electrical connections will turn off by themselves.

To make sure that the connection is working properly, make sure that your circuit breaker isn’t turned off.
