Fixing your home Roof

Several roof damages are mild and distinct; we don’t need a roof repair professional to deal with such damages and can fix them ourselves. We have been through a lot of causes and types of roof damage like moisture, moss, punctures, cracks, broken or missing shingles. Dealing with each of such damage is different and specific. If the damage is severe and has led to the weakening of the structural integrity of the roof, we must not try to climb the roof or fix it by ourselves because there is a very high tendency that the roof may collapse and we may get massive injuries.

Let’s go through the various methods that will help us to repair a roof by ourselves:

Dealing with damaged flashing

Flashing protects the crease between fixtures like chimneys or skylights and the roof. Flashing are generally made up of sheet metal or plastic. Flashing are also available for the venting pipes under your roofing material. The area around these fixtures will become vulnerable to rain and moisture if the flashing is cracked, loose or worn. Remove the worn one and replace it with new flashing. Some surrounding materials, such as shingles, will need to be lifted away for removal and installation of new flashing.

Repairing punctures

Adverse weather conditions, falling branches of trees, and animals can create holes and punctures in our roofing material. These roof repairs are best managed by professional roof damage experts, as they include too many steps and may demand reframing any part of the roof. After taking the preliminary steps, your roofer will install a layer of sheathing, along with felting paper and shingles. You may attempt to cover the hole with a substitute material if it is not large enough, you can seal it up with roofing caulk, but this will create more significant problems by allowing moisture to get in.

Damaged or Missing Shingles

You can easily remove the old shingles and replace them with new ones. Always use proactive after replacing your shingles, especially in case of pooling water and ice dams to avoid future damage. Eliminate snow to prevent ice dams and keep your gutters clear to prevent drain blockage.

Corroded Vertical Slits should be fixed

The maximum vulnerability is present between the slits in each roofing tile. If water is allowed to run through them, it exposes the underlying roofing materials, profoundly. Replace the corroded shingles with new ones as soon as possible to prevent further damage. You should have your roof frequently inspected, especially if it is 15 to 20 years old.

In the end, I would suggest that before you climb up the roof to replace it or repair it, you must carry out a thorough research about the damage, the repair procedure and the methods of handling the tools and equipment. You can watch some videos of professionals or DIYs repair the roof on the internet and learn to control the tools.

Please take care of the following safety tips to avoid any accidents:

  • Always put on shoes and rubber gloves to ensure proper traction and to escape abrasion and laceration.
  • Always climb up using a steady ladder, that you are comfortable with using. Take a trial of going up and coming down, before starting the heavy work.
  • Never climb a roof that has lost its structural integrity or is sagging, such roofs may collapse.
  • Do not climb the roof during storms, glacial periods, or when it is damp or mossy; you might slip down.
  • Never get into the damage work alone; always have someone who can assist you!
