Remove Old Stains From Carpet

Do you have old stains in your carpet that you’re looking to get rid of?

Carpet stains are not only unsightly, but they can also affect the resale value of your home. But, what can you do to get rid of set-in stains?

Check out this guide to discover everything you need to know about how to remove old stains from carpet (even ancient ones!).

Invest in a Steam Cleaner

While there are all kinds of home remedies you can use to remove old carpet stains, one of the best ways to start cleaning your carpet is with a steam cleaner.

Steam cleaning removes dirt and debris and also helps restore the beauty of your carpet. Steam cleaning can also remove nasty toxins that whole up in your carpet that a traditional vacuum cleaner is unable to remove.

These substances include things like allergens, dust mites, bacteria, and other germs. Even if your carpet doesn’t have any deep, set-in stains, it’s still a good idea to steam clean your carpets every 12 to 18 months.

Removing Wine and Juice Stains

If you have an unsightly wine or juice stain that needs to go, here’s what you need to do to get rid of it:

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap and 1/4 cup of white vinegar in a spray bottle
  • Fill the rest of the spray bottle with water
  • Spray the stain liberally and allow the solution to sit for 5 to 10 minutes
  • Blot the stain with a dry clean towel

Even if the stain has been there for a while, this solution should do the trick!

Pet Stains

We love our pets, but we all know that they can leave hard-to-remove stains on our carpets. Here’s how to remove a set-in pet stain:

  •  Moisten the stain and then apply a carpet cleaning product that’s specifically formulated for pet stains
  • Mix 1/4 cup of white vinegar with one quart of warm water and spritz on the stain to neutralize the odor

If you don’t have a pet stain cleaning product available, you can also mix a quart of warm water with a bit of laundry detergent and spray the solution on the stain.

Coffee Stains

If left untreated, coffee stains can leave your carpet looking absolutely filthy. Here’s how to remove coffee stains:

  • Mix water, vinegar, and a gently non-bleach detergent
  • Spray the mixture on the stain
  • Blot the stain and repeat if necessary

There are also several ready-made products you can buy that are formulated specifically for removing coffee stains.

Ink Stains

Ink stains may seem impossible to remove. However, getting rid of ink stains is possible. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Dampen a clean cloth with isopropyl alcohol and dab the stain
  • Do not rub or scrub, as this can cause the ink stain to spread
  • You may also try hairspray, nail polish remover, or other household products with a high alcohol content to remove the stain

Make sure to always perform a test on a small, hidden piece of carpet to make sure you don’t cause further damage.
