Storage Hacks for a Small Kitchen

Whether you know it or not, after your bedroom, your kitchen is the room in your house you spend the most time in. That’s why things can go from tidy to messy in a matter of minutes, if your kitchen is small.

While people with small kitchens fall into the minority – only around 8% of people would describe the kitchen in their as compact – you’ll come across a small kitchen if you move a lot.

In order to help you find your way around a compact kitchen, we’ve prepared 5 storage hacks that will allow you to make the most out of a small kitchen and help you pack everything you need right there.

1.     Start Using Open Shelving For More Space

The first we have is also a big stylistic choice. Make sure to think about this decision seriously before you go with it, because it will require some investment. Since a small kitchen doesn’t have enough space to hang a classic cabinet, you can install open shelves. These shelves will allow you to add a lot of storage space plus will make it easier for you to reach for and pick up mugs, glasses, and small dishes. This may be an interesting DIY project but if you never done something like that before, consult a professional.

2.     Use Jars to Compensate a Lack of Pantry

Some kitchens simply don’t have enough pantry space for all of your food items and kitchen utensils. This might seem like a crippling thing at first, however, if you have some mason jars, it’s not the end of the world. You just need to put some items like pasta, sugar, and flour into these jars, and voila, you’ve managed to save space. In addition, you can take dry foods like pasta, put them into small bags, and place them inside a bigger quart-sized jar.

3.     Freeze Food Flat to Save Freezer Space

A large freezer is a great tool when it comes to long-term food savings. Whether you have a classic or a modern reach-in freezer, chances are, you’re wasting a lot of space. However, just putting food in the freezer won’t do you any good. Not only will it take up a lot of space but it will also leave your food wet and mushy after defrosting. To avoid this, you just need to freeze your food flat. You can achieve this by putting the food in separate bags and pressing all of the air out of them slowly.

4.     Make a Spice Rack Out of Your Drawer

Most of us have a drawer in our kitchen that only collects dust and junk you don’t know where to place. Needless to say, this is a huge waste of space. Plus, this enables you and your family members to accumulate clutter and make the drawer impossible to use. You need to get that drawer in order if you want to use every inch of your kitchen correctly. The best way to use it as a spice-rack replacement. That will allow you to free up your cabinet. Plus keeping spices near by will make cooking easier.

5.     Hang Things Above the Fridge and the Stove

Last but not least, we have one of the most overlooked spots that can give you additional space in your kitchen – the empty space above your stove and fridge. You can easily put all of that space to use if your stove doesn’t have a hood to prevent anything from hanging there. You just need to put some s-hooks above the fridge and stove and you’ll be able to hang all of the utensils that take up too much space in your drawers and on your shelves.
