1. Use Your Fingers to Detangle

It’s no surprise that tight curls mean a few tangles here and there. Our first tip on the list is to use your fingers to detangle your curls. Your fingers are one of the best tools you have when it comes to detangling.

Using your fingers means a smoother and gentler experience for your curls. Just be sure to work your way from the ends up and to take your time. Be patient with your curls and don’t try to force any tangles out that’ll result in ripping your hair.

Starting from the ends and working your way up is a faster way to detangle your hair and will result in less breakage.

2. Using a Pre-Poo

Before washing your hair, you should always consider using a pre-poo. Using a pre-shampoo treatment is one of the best ways to keep your hair and scalp moisturized. Pre-poo means applying a pre-shampoo to your dry hair before washing it.

It’s a technique that makes pinpointing dry ends much easier to do than when your hair is wet. When your hair is dry, you can apply the pre-poo where your hair needs it most and then comb the rest through your hair using your fingers. You’ll be able to manage your tangles and correct them much easier this way.

3. Weekly Scalp Treatments

Weekly scalp treatments are another wonderful way to keep your hair moisturized from the scalp down. Once a week, find a scalp treatment that works best for you and treat yourself with it. Some good choices are red clay and Aragon oil.

There are other forms of scalp treatments available, so find something that works best with your hair. Then, you’ll want to massage this into your scalp and hair and let it sit for about 20 minutes. When done, you can then rinse it out.

The end result is a clarified scalp that will build a foundation for healthy curls.

4. Dry the Right Way

Yes, there’s a right and wrong way to dry your hair. If you step out of the shower and begin to wring and scrub your hair with a towel, then you’re doing it the wrong way. The right way to dry your hair and keep your curls happy and healthy is to use a cotton t-shirt to gently dry your hair.

You can then scrunch the rest of the water out when done. After doing these steps, allow your hair to air dry. To prevent frizzing, use a leave-in conditioner before allowing it to air dry.

Before it’s done drying, be sure not to run your fingers through your hair or interrupt the drying process in any way as this might cause frizzing.

5. Toss Your Brush

If you have naturally curly hair, then you shouldn’t be using a brush. If you do try to force a brush through your hair, toss your brush out. The only brushing instrument you should be using on your hair is a wide-toothed comb.

Comb your hair out before washing it. You can also consider using your fingers to comb through your hair after washing it instead. Either way, you don’t need that damaging hairbrush.

6. Receive Regular Trims

Regular trims are a must when caring for curly hair. Having a trim done every 6-8 weeks is the best way to ensure your curls stay healthy and bouncy. Failure to do so could result in dry and frizzy hair.

You don’t need to worry about losing your length. You’ll only need a small trim to keep your ends from becoming split.

7. Find a Good Bed Routine

Your bed routine for your hair is another important factor in keeping your curls looking their best. The pineapple technique is one way to keep your curls healthy while you sleep. To do this, gather your hair at the top of your head using a scrunchy.

This helps keep your curls nice and tight. When you wake up, take your ponytail out, and you’re good to go. You should also purchase silk pillowcases, which help in preventing frizz and hair breakage.
