When is it Time to Consider Replacing Siding on Your House?

The siding on a house has many roles to play. For one, it helps keep out different outdoor elements from entering your home. It can also help keep your home insulated.

Unfortunately, a house with siding on its exterior will need a bit of maintenance to keep it functioning properly. When’s the last time you inspected your house’s siding? It might be time that you head outside and do so.

When is the right time to think about replacing siding on house exteriors? There are a few signs that can help you determine that it is indeed time to make a replacement. To learn about these signs, continue reading below.

If your house is suffering from any of the symptoms listed below, then you know it’s time to call in a professional! Here’s what you need to know.

1. It Begins to Peel or Fade

If your home has wood siding on its exterior, then this siding should last between 8 and 10 years. Now, keep in mind that this time range is based on a home’s siding that’s placed under average conditions. Once you begin to notice that you’re heading outside a lot to repaint your siding, you’ll want to start considering replacing it.

Any fading or peeling of the paint is a good sign that it’s time. After replacing it, look into a sun-resistant siding or fiber cement siding, which might help prevent your new siding from fading and peeling as well.

2. It’s Beginning to Rot

If you’ve noticed that your home’s siding has begun to rot or warp due to rot, then you’ll want to replace it. If you’re not sure if your siding is rotten or not, take a screwdriver and using caution, place it under the siding. If the area under the siding is soft, then you have rotten siding.

When the rotting process has become so advance that the material underneath the siding is soft, it’s beyond repair. Another thing to keep in mind is that not all rot is moist and soft. You’ll need to look out for dry rot as well.

To test for dry rot, take your screwdriver and with a gentle force, hit the outside of your siding. Your siding should NOT split or crumble. If it does, you might have a dry rot issue.

Also, be on the alert for hollow sounds. Any of these reactions to you hitting the siding should signal dry rot.

3. It’s Cracking or Coming Loose

There are a few reasons why siding might become cracked or loose. Strong winds can cause this reaction, and a storm of any kind is a prime candidate. Another reason why your home’s siding might be coming loose is due to old age.

If you notice any siding pannels that are cracking or coming loose, the best next step to take is to contact a siding company for an inspection. The professionals will tell you if you’re able to replace individual panels, a section of panels, or all of the siding.

4. It’s Damaged

If your siding is damaged in any way, it’s time to replace it. This could be damage caused by a storm or damage caused by something else such as a football hitting it or other accidents. Another reason for holes or damage in your siding could be pests.

Insects like ants, termites, and other pests could be burrowing their way into your siding. When this happens, the holes in your siding leave your home at risk for moisture. This moisture could be from either rain or snow.

And if the issue isn’t corrected, moisture could eventually lead to mold.

5. Mold Has Begun to Grow

If you’ve noticed that mold has begun to grow on or under your siding, you have a major issue on your hands. Moisture that’s trapped under your siding can cause mold, mildew, algae, and other growths. Do keep in mind, however, that some mold is harmless, but you’ll want to be sure that the kind growing on your home isn’t dangerous.

Clean this mold off twice a year at the least. Check the siding to ensure that it’s protecting your home from moisture as it should. If it is, you won’t have to worry too much about mold growth.

Otherwise, be sure to have a professional come out as soon as possible to assess the situation.

6. There Are Signs of Water Damage

One of the main duties of your siding is to keep moisture and water from entering your home’s structure. If you’ve noticed any water stains on your home’s interior walls or moisture behind wallpaper, then you’ll want to complete a full inspection of your siding.

Wood siding that becomes wet will show bubbles in the siding paint. Even if your siding material isn’t wood, you still might see these bubbles. The best way to stay on top of this is to check your home’s interior walls after a rain or snowstorm.
