When it comes to our hair routines, we are pretty guilty of not making them environmentally friendly. In fact, when we’re putting on a hair mask or lathering shampoo into our hair, it tends to slip our minds. Truth is, there are loads of small steps we can take to make a big impact – whether it’s our choice of products or our water use, we can all do our part to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

It’s time to stop, think and make a change in our lives – this doesn’t mean not enjoying a therapeutic hair routine as we know and love it, but just tweaking one or two points, you will still enjoy it!

Swotting Up On Ingredients

One of the most important points is to swot up on the ingredients in the products you use. With countries cutting down on toxic chemicals, you need to make sure that none of them are on the bottle you’re about to purchase. A lot of these chemicals have been banned because they are unsafe for the environment – and if they’re not good for the environment, how can you expect them to be for your hair? These harmful substances, though they may make your hair seem luscious and soft, in the long run, may play havoc with your locks.

Finding Alternatives

You shouldn’t have to cut down in products all together, but cut down on the harmful ones, and find healthier alternatives. You can still treat yourself to that amazing hair mask twice a week if you can find a vegan one for example. Of course, what with eco-friendly being deemed as “a trend” by some companies, still study the list of ingredients to make sure vegan isn’t just a buzzword, and they mean what they say!

Studying Companies

Not only can products be harmful within their ingredients, but even with their actual containers – study companies who recycle their packaging or provide long-lasting bars to limit their use of plastic. Shampoo and conditioner bars are definitely ones to opt for to save the environment! Other brands allow you to bring old packaging back into store or boast a fully-recycled strategy.

Limiting Our Water Use

We love a long soak in the bath or a nice hot shower – but our water use is one of the key culprits for global warming. In particular, those of us who wash our hair everyday are guilty, we consume around 14,222 liters of water per year each! And that’s without counting the whole styling process once we’ve stepped out of the shower.

Washing your hair everyday isn’t healthy for your hair anyway, so it’s good to get into that routine of every 2-3 days, in the meantime, use dry shampoos, and fun hairstyles to tide you by.

Another trick is to swap your rinse-out products with leave-in products – this means that you don’t use as much water and you can get on with the rest of your hair routine, green, quick and effective! What’s not to like?

Take A Colder Shower

Though we love a warm bath or shower, we can lower the temperature by a few degrees – though this may seem a little more difficult in winter, this is feasible in the summer months on those days where jumping into a huge swimming pool is more than tempting! It’s energizing, and though at 7am in the morning, doesn’t seem terribly appealing, it will make you feel ready to face the rest of the day!

Accelerate Your Drying Time

Our styling process is another culprit of global warming – our straighteners, our hairdryers, our curling wands, whatever your hair ally is, it’s harming the planet. This doesn’t mean to stay scrap your styling routine, because we know that’s oh so precious to everyone, but there are ways around it. You can now purchase hair drying accelerator sprays to spray into your hair before drying it, this of course speeds up the drying time and means you use your hairdryer a lot less!

Choose Your Salon Wisely

Hairdressers use copious quantities of water and heat-generating products every single day, so if there is something you can do about it, it is to choose your salon wisely. Many salons now opt for eco-friendly, sustainable products, in the fight against global warming and harsh chemicals. Salons are slowly but surely adopting this kind of strategy and doing their bit! In London for example, there are several hair salons that are taking this path, and hopefully, many more will follow suite.

Recycle!

If you are buying from a brand that does not recycle their packaging or encourage returning their bottles in store, then you can recycle. Whether you take them to your nearest recycling point or, if the brand you use has rather snazzy packaging, why not use them as decoration or containers in your home – upcycling is becoming such a fun way of having one-of-a-kind objects in your home!
