How Do You Make CBD Water?

cbd water

You might have heard of CBD water before. It seems like the ideal solution, to be able to take your cannabidiol as simply as sipping your water bottle. You could take your water bottle to your next big presentation and control the anxiety one sip at a time. You can have your water bottle ready during stressful times at work or uni. You could make sure you have this ready at your next important meeting or interview.

CBD infused water is making waves in all the right ways. There are now a huge range of brands and a lot of different flavours. Meaning if you have always found the taste of water boring, you can find a refreshing flavour of CBD water.

Why CBD Water?

Having CBD water available in a very inconspicuous format can help you get the beneficial effects of CBD without the social stigma. For a lot of people, this is the perfect balance between having their cannabidiols and not making it obvious to others. Although CBD doesn't get you high or impede you in any way, people still have varying opinions on it.

How Do You Make It?

But before you go running and put a few drops of your CBD oil in your water bottle, you need to know that water and oil don’t mix. This is most likely why you might have heard of CBD water, but most likely haven’t had a chance to try it yet. Plainly mixing CBD oil and water will give you just that, water with a few drops of CBD oil. You might as well take the drops straight under the tongue on or inside of your cheek and drink a glass of water in this case.

The reason why oil doesn’t mix with water has to do that water molecules are polar, and oil molecules are non-polar. Because water is polar, it will have a charge and be attracted to molecules with the same characteristics, which in most cases will be other water molecules. Oil molecules being non-polar will be attracted to other oil molecules. If you drop some oil into the water and give it a good shake, it will look like it has been mixed at first. But give it enough time, and you will see the oil molecules sticking together and making a deposit of oil in the water, most likely drifting on the surface of the water.

One way to prevent oil and water separating is by using an emulsifier. The emulsifier prevents or at least slows, the oil and water from separating. The way emulsifiers work is to have a polar and non-polar part. One will stick with the polar water molecules, and the other will stick with the non-polar oil. Emulsifiers do need a proper shake or stir to get mixed in properly, but once done, it should keep your water mixed. You probably already own emulsifiers as both egg yolk and mustard can perform this role. Most likely you are not looking for egg yoke or mustard flavoured water though.

There are alternatives, though, which are almost flavourless. You could try soy lecithin powder which is already widely used in (experimental) cooking. It is partially water-soluble, an emulsifying agent that helps fat and water stay together. Therefore, it is often added to foods, such as chocolate, cheese, margarine, and salad dressing if you are looking for more ways to use it.

Another alternative would be Polysorbate, which is mainly used in cosmetics but also has been used in the food industry. Polysorbate should be totally fine to use, but due to its varied uses in the cosmetic industry, there will be sources only warning you from using this ingredient. Always make sure to use food-grade Polysorbate if you want to go down this route.

It Sounds Complicated…

Well, it is. Although you can probably produce a fine water a home, getting the balance right - ensuring that your water is pH balanced and doesn’t taste odd is no easy feat. Which is why there has been such significant interest from CBD users in CBD specialist brands creating water. There is also the cost-effectiveness of your own water you need to consider. You’ll be working on a trial and error basis and the cost of the CBD (or extract process if you do that manually too), the costs will run you hard. So while there is always room for experiment with your CBD oils, perhaps the making of water is best left to the professionals, while you make the cake.
