Adapt to City Life: 3 Essential Tips for Living in New York

Over 8.5 million people live in NYC, making it the largest city in America. There’s no denying the allure of moving to the Big Apple, from the food and entertainment to the job opportunities, especially in creative fields like theater and journalism.

If you’re ready to take the plunge and try living in New York, you probably have tons of questions. “How will I find my way around?” “Where should I look for an apartment?”

We have the answers to all these questions and more. Keep reading to discover three essential tips for those planning to relocate to New York City.

1. Figure Out the Subway System

The subway system is by far the best way to get around the city. It’s convenient, affordable, and the fastest way to get from point A to point B.

While it may seem complicated, it’s fairly easy to master. Subway lines are color-coordinated, so green lines are on the east side while blue lines are on the west.

Each grouping also has one express train which skips a bunch of stops. This will cut down on your travel time, but you’ll want to make sure it doesn’t skip the stop you need to get off on. Also, remember that some express trains will switch to the local route during weekends and evenings.

Oh, and don’t get on the only empty subway car. Chances are, there’s a good reason it’s empty.

2. Find the Right Apartment

Finding an apartment in New York is no easy task, but you can do it. Start by deciding which borough (Manhattan, Queens, etc.) you want and can afford to live in.

Then search online for apartments, look at homes in foreclosure, and ask people you know if anyone is looking for a roommate. Before your scheduled tour, look at NYPD’s crime statistics for the area and check it out at night (if it’s safe) to gauge noise levels.

During your tour, check for pests and ask if you can negotiate the rent. Most importantly, bring everything you need to fill out the application with you. If you like the apartment, apply for it before you leave.

3. Save Money Where You Can

It’s no secret that NYC is expensive. You can’t avoid the costs of rent and transportation, so it’s important to save where you can.

Instead of splurging on Broadway shows and other expensive events, look for the many cheap or free activities in the city. Cook most of your meals at home, and opt for cheap meals, like deli sandwiches and $1 slices of pizza when you choose to eat out.
