The Perfect Rome Itinerary: 9 Must-Visit Rome Attractions

In a city filled with antiquity and icons of faith, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed.

The eternal city of Rome has more to offer than your typical family vacation. While other cities have a modern approach to family fun, Rome has just a little bit of everything. You’ll find some of the most famous restaurants and designers hanging around Rome, but you’ll also find tons of natural beauty throughout the city.

This ancient city has everything from ancient churches and famous wishing fountains to historic sites such as the Colosseum and the pantheon.

To help you prevent missing out on some of the best sights and sounds of Rome, we’ve put together this list of the top can’t miss Rome attractions that the whole family will love.

So, pack your bags and let’s get started.

The Colosseum

Of course, the Colosseum is on the top of our list. Who could visit Rome and miss this giant monument?

Built during the Flavian dynasty in 72-80 AD, the Colosseum is one of the most recognizable historic sites in the world today. The structure is over 2000 years old and was used for gladiator combat and public spectacles.

There’s a reason the Colosseum brought in over 7 million tourists in 2018.

St Peter’s Basilica

As the Colosseum is of the most recognizable in the world, Saint Peter’s Basilica is one of the holiest in the world.

Saint Peter’s Basilica is one of the largest churches in the world and is the burial site for Saint Peter.

If you aren’t familiar with the Christian faith, Saint Peter was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ. He was also the first pope.

Saint Peter’s Basilica is famously known for its huge dome shape, which was designed in the 16th century by Michelangelo.

Pantheon

Now that the most recognizable and the holiest site have been covered, the pantheon is the best preserved ancient structure in the eternal city.

Originally a temple serving the pagan gods, the pantheon still stands virtually unharmed by natures weathering and tourist damage.

Even more impressive, the pantheon is so old that historians have been unable to determine the exact age, although we suspect it is nearly 2000 years old.

Fun fact: the word “pantheon” means “honor all gods.” Though, the test of time has shown that the gods may have honored the pantheon in this case.

Trevi Fountain

If you ever enjoyed throwing pennies into the fountain when you were a kid, you definitely can’t miss a visit to the Trevi fountain.

The Trevi fountain is of the most famous fountains in the world and was designed by Nicola Salvi in the 18th century. This fountain is a Goldmine for anyone looking to revisit those childhood memories.

The Vatican Museums

What’s the Vatican?

The Vatican is the smallest independent state in the world. It has an area of less than half of a kilometer and is mostly enclosed by the Vatican walls.

Ticket lines for the Vatican museums are typically long and time-consuming. A good way to skip lines is to join a tour group that walks the museums.

The Spanish Steps

The Spanish steps consist of 138 steps and were financed by a French diplomat. The French wanted to link the Trinità dei Monti with the Spanish piazza.

While the Spanish steps are a major historical sites in the city of Rome, it may not feel like it because the steps are in a busy commercial center.

Artists of all kinds find their way to the Spanish steps to practice and show off their skills.

The best part about the Spanish steps is since they are located in a busy city center, they are completely free to climb and picnic on.

Check out Some Cool Tours

One great thing about Rome is that it has many different tours available.

Tours are great because not only do you get to see your favorite attractions, but you’ll also get extra information about each site. Tours often offer fun facts and historical details that you may not already know before visiting.

You can go through different companies to find all sorts of different tours, some companies will even allow you to build your own custom tour. This way you can see everything you wanted to see and you will have a fun guide to make the most out of each site.

If you’re looking for something a little bit more laid-back and cost-efficient, you can usually find tours that are guided by locals.

Often times, the locals will create small tour groups, not because they want to charge and make a profit, but because they like to travel and are interested in meeting new people. Many locals also love to share what their favorite things are in their home city.

Visit All the Rome Attractions

We know you want to see everything, but, you would have to pick up your life and move to Rome in order to experience everything that the city has to offer. And even then, not all of the locals are fully aware of all the Rome attractions.

Our best advice is to just take your time and make the most out of each attraction, instead of trying to see everything and one quick go-round.

After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
