Sorting Activities
It is a natural human instinct to sort and organize. For young children, these concepts are fascinating and they enjoy doing activities that require them to sort objects. The bonus? They are building a foundation for math concepts and don’t even realize it!
- Gather a variety of small colored objects: Buttons, beads, marbles, pom-poms or anything else you can think of. Lay a muffin tin in front of your child and ask them to group these objects by shape, color, size or anything else you can think of.
- Go on a nature walk and collect a small compilation of stones. Use a small basin of warm water and soap to let your child wash them, laying them to dry in order of size.
- If you have alphabet flash cards, mix them up and ask your child to put them in the correct order. This is a great lesson not just in sorting, but also helping identify letters and their order in the alphabet.
Gross Motor
Being rambunctious is part of being a kid! Gross motor skills are essential for helping children to properly develop muscles and prepare the brain to learn to sit, stand and walk properly. Get your little one moving with these fun gross motor activities.
- Obstacle courses are great fun, especially if you have a group of children together. Make up fun challenges as they go: “Run to the fence and touch it, pick up a rock and run back to me and give me a high five!” Things will get silly, competitive, and best of all it will wear them out.
- Children of all ages love musical chairs, especially when you play fun music.
- Speaking of music, have a dance party! Little ones are born with rhythm, so bump up the music and get movin’ and groovin’!
