Tips for Feeling and Looking Your Best on a Hot

There’s a lot you can control when taking a trip to Laos. You can get your Laos tourist visa ahead of time to prevent problems, you can decide where you’re staying, and you get to decide exactly how you’re going to get there.

However, there is also a lot that is out of your control. That includes the weather.

Temperatures are relatively warm year-round, and it can get really humid, which can make the temperature seem even higher. Day after day of hot temps can make you grouchy, uncomfortable, and it can cause you to dream of returning home.

Don’t let the hot, humid weather in Laos ruin your vacation. You really can look and feel your best, no matter what the temperature, with these tips.

Take It Easy When You First Arrive

You may want to jump into your vacation headfirst when you arrive in Laos, but it’s actually much better to slow down. It’s a good idea to take things slow and rest when you’re trying to get over jet lag, but it’s also the best way to adjust to the weather.

It can be a shock to your system to deal with unrelenting heat and humidity you aren’t used to. That can increase your chances of dehydration and exhaustion if you plan exciting adventures when you first get off the plane.

Instead, sip on a cold beverage in a café or stroll through a market the first day or two. It will give your body a chance to adjust before you take on more exciting challenges in the heat.

Wear Clothing You May Not Normally Wear

What you choose to wear is vital to how you’re going to feel in the hot weather. That means you may have to step outside your comfort zone and wear something you don’t normally wear.

When dressing for hot weather, consider things like wearing:

  • Shorts or skirts, even if you prefer pants.
  • Breathable fabrics, like linen, and avoid polyester.
  • Loose-fitting clothing.
  • Large UV-protected sunglasses.

Large brimmed sunhats and baseball caps can help keep your face out of the sun, but if it’s too hot, having something on top of your head can actually trap the heat. Instead, try wearing a visor, even if you wouldn’t normally be caught dead in one back home.

Plan Your Day According to the Heat

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with not wanting to be out in the heat. That doesn’t mean you have to stay in the hotel morning, noon, and night! Instead, plan your day around when it’s the hottest.

For example, you may want to try a local farmer’s market in the morning, but then head back to the hotel for the early part of the afternoon. You can venture out to a restaurant in the evening.

If you want to stay busy during the hottest part of the day, try an indoor museum or shopping center. Swimming is also a great way to be outside and beat the heat at the same time.

Carry Plenty of Water

Dehydration is a serious problem when it’s hot and humid. It requires a lot more water to stay hydrated than you might be used to, which means you may not drink enough. Make sure a sip of water is never very far away by carrying plenty of water with you.

It also means avoiding drinks that can dehydrate you. Avoid soda and alcohol during the hottest part of the day. If you aren’t a huge fan of water, tea and coconut water can be good alternatives.

Adjust Your Diet

Notice a difference in your appetite while you’re traveling in Laos? Listen to your body. What it needs and craves is very different in hot, humid weather than other climates.

Cool food is always a good choice for hot weather. Ice cream and slushies are popular choices in the heat, but cold soups make a great lunch and fruit makes a great afternoon snack.

How you eat should change too. It takes more energy to digest a large meal than a small one, and you need all the energy you can get when exposed to high, humid temperatures. Instead, eat smaller, more frequent meals during your vacation.

The heat and humidity can leave you feeling and looking frazzled. Don’t let dehydration and exhaustion keep you from experiencing everything Laos has to offer! With the tips on this list, you can stay cool, and you’ll feel great and look good doing it.
