4 Incredible Stages of Brain Development in Children

Human life is incredibly divine!  The processthrough which a human brain grows and develops from the time one is conceived to old age is very interesting. If you want to learn how life develops, then watch children closely.  Children are capable of learning many things at different stages.

How they develop these intellectual skills is of such profound interest.  Indeed, it doesn’t just happen; there is an order in which things take place and the season.  Brain growth and maturation is a continuous process that comprises of four major milestones.  These stages allow the child to see the world differently at each level.

The stages normally come with different ages of growth and maturity in children.  The years are quoted in an average form and some children may develop faster or slower.

The 4 stages of brain development in children

  • The sensorimotor stage (birth to 2 years) – This is the first stage that the children learn about their new world using their senses and manipulation of objects. The basic brain starts forming before birth but the development is far from complete.  In this stage, there are 24 million connections made every minute in the brain.  The brain must be really big!
  • The preoperational stage (2 to 7 years) – In this stage, children develop memory and imagination. They also get to understand things symbolically as well as understand the ideas of the past and the future.  Language, vision, emotions and physical coordination all continue to develop during this time due to the high level of connections between the child’s brain.  Learning different skills like a language, drawing, playing an instrument is also common.
  • Concrete operational Stage (7 to 11 years) – This stage allows the children to become more aware of external events as well as feelings. They become more aware of the fact that not everyone shares their opinions, beliefs and feelings.
  • Formal operational stage (11 and older) – At this stage, the children are able to use logic to solve problems, plan for the future as well as view the world around them. Synaptic networks become much stable and frontal influences also grow much stronger.  This stage is better known as emergent adulthood.

The brain is the interface between the child and the world.  These major milestones in brain maturation color the world of children.

Caution

This information comes with a caution!  While you now know the developments that should take place in a child’s life within various age brackets you should push your child to reach those levels no matter what.  Also, do not also push the children to learn a million different things just because their time has come.

Young children learn best when left on their own to develop natural tendencies and curiosity.  Kids learn a lot through play; that’s the most you need to give them.  Stress and pressure only inhibit the brain’s ability to learn!

It is therefore important that your child learn how have a natural and balanced experience that enables them to try things many times until they can get them right.  Allow them to make mistakes in their play so that they can grow up having learned valuable lessons.
