What You Need to Know Before Care a Green Garden

Gardening has become one of the hottest trends in the recent times as more and more people discover the joys it brings. Not to mention the benefits it gives to both health and financial concerns.

If you are planning to start your own garden, here are some of the things you need to know:

   1. Examine Plants Carefully Before Buying

When buying plants, it is important that you examine first the overall condition. From the leaves and stems all the way to its roots. You can easily spot a healthy plant through its appearance. Rotted stems and dead spots are the usual things you need to check before buying.

The same is true for the roots. Although only a few who normally do this, root quality must be checked first as some plants appear healthy through its leaves. Roots must appear firm, strong, and white if they are healthy inside out.

   2. Use Fully-Composted Yard Waste

As a beginner, you should know that compost pile is essential to plants. But it is also important to note that not all materials in a compost pile have the same rate of decomposition. Hence, the conditions may affect your plants especially the sensitive ones.

If you are not sure of the condition, avoid using yard waste as mulch.

   3. Keep An Eye On Your Bugs

Bugs are quite normal to plants but the damage it can bring is much more than a cosmetic. Virus and bacteria can only enter a plant when there are holes and openings. These entrances are usually provided by the present bugs infecting your plants.

Also, some bugs are apparently carriers of certain plant diseases which could fatally harm all your greens. So, check the bugs every now and then and try to equip yourself with knowledge concerning pest control and prevention.

   4. Clean Up In The Fall

Even if you live in a moderate climate, you must and always clean your garden during the fall seasons. Diseases can actually live on dead leaves and debris making it quite convenient to attack the new ones as spring comes.

By cleaning up the leaves and debris that are usually present in your yard even not in a fall season, you could dramatically decrease the risks of harming your plants.

   5. Apply The Correct Fertilizer

When fertilizing plants, you must be very delicate in the application. Too much fertilizer will stress out your plants, burn the roots, and reduce the ability to absorb water. These all can lead to harming fatally your plants.

On the other hand, plants starved from nutrients are quite smaller and more apparent to risks of having dead spots. So, you must be aware how much fertilizer is needed.

The best way you can do this is by having your soil tested out through your local extension agency. The tests will provide you the accurate information on nutrient levels that are present in your soil.

   6. Plant Disease-Resistant Varieties

If you are well-overwhelmed in taking care of your plants because of the usual diseases that they could get, there are actually varieties of plants that are disease-resistant.

Instead of getting sick and stressed, these plants will fight off the diseases and bacteria. You could normally see these varieties on crops and greens but don’t expect to see them on the ornamentals. Although there are still flower varieties that are disease-resistant, they are rare.

   7. Prune Damaged Limbs At The Right Time

When trimming damaged limbs, you must note that it should be done at the right time. Most people tend to do it on verge of spring season but it might be too late for the plant. In fact, trimming these damaged parts must be done during the late winter.

Winter season is the time when wounded plant usually gets infected. The diseases will then be established afterward once the plant is dormant. Hence, taking this out just before the spring will prevent the infection to spread to new growth.

   8. Choose and Site Plants Appropriately

Your success in gardening is largely affected by your choice of plants and locations where to place them. If you are aiming to plant a shade-loving green right in the zone where the sun is fully shining all throughout the day, expect your plants won’t last long.

It’s not rocket science at all. Choose and site your plants according to their health needs for them to be able to grow properly.

   9. Water Properly

Watering your plants is a must. However, water is also much loved by many diseases because there are those bacteria that grow maturely on a watery environment. To avoid such bacteria growing just right beside your plant, you must water properly.

Soaker hoses and drip irrigation are watering methods that avoid this kind of environment for the diseases. If you are watering by hand, you must hold the plants out of the way as you water the roots.

   10. Don’t Crowd Plants

In placing your plants, you must consider the spacing in between them as they need much space to grow and mature. If your plants are crowded and placed side by side with one another, they won’t grow healthy as the likelihood of competing with nutrients, sunlight, and water is largely apparent.

Also, infections and diseases can spread quickly if plants are in direct contact with one another. Again, site them accordingly and appropriately.

Basically, these are the things you need to know primarily when starting a gardening hobby. While it may seem challenging all together, you will surely reap all the benefits when your plants grow maturely and healthily.
