Okay, so it may be a few weeks away yet (yes, weeks!) but Christmas is the biggest holiday of the year, and once November hits, it’s often here within the blink of an eye. If you’re spending this year’s Christmas festivities with the in-laws you may be dreading the thought of Christmas beginning. But, Christmas with the in-laws doesn’t have to be as bad as you may think. If they’re coming to your house to stay, here’s how you get through it.
Forget About Pleasing Everyone
If your main aim is to keep everyone happy at all times, give up now. It’s impossible to please everyone so don’t set the bar so high. All you can do is your best. As long as your in-laws know you’re making an effort and planning things with their enjoyment in mind, everything you do will be appreciated. If you have your other side of the family to balance as well, try and reach a compromise. For example, perhaps you’ll have Christmas eve and Christmas dinner at your parent’s house, and then host your in-laws at your house from Boxing Day until New Years.
Keep Everyone Comfortable
The last thing you want to experience is the wrath of your mother-in-law at the breakfast table because she didn’t get a good night’s sleep in the kid’s bunk beds. It’s important for the in-laws to be as comfortable as possible and have a private space they can retire to when they need some peace and quiet. You could even ship their own comfort blankets or heated blankets to your home with companies like Shiply who send large items. The more well rested your in-laws are, the easier your time spent with them will be.
Plan Your Food
The biggest stress about having lots of people in the house is the extra cooking. If you’re cooking for a large family, it will take some planning. It won’t be easy to cook to everyone’s tastes so you may want to get a variety of different meals that are easy to make. Plan at least one night off for yourself, where you call in a take-away or book a table for everyone at a restaurant. It will be easier to get through your time if you know you can let your hair down for one night.
Go Along with Traditions
Your partner has probably created many different traditions with your in-laws while growing up. It’s only natural that your in-laws will want to take part in them while they’re visiting. It could be anything, from attending midnight mass to watching Home Alone while decorating the Christmas tree. It’s important you allow these family traditions to take place so your in-laws get the little pieces of joy they came for.
Fresh air could be your life-line when you’re feeling overwhelmed. If you’ve got the in-laws staying with you, there are bound to be times where you feel frustrated. When you do, just step outside and take a few deep breaths, instead of saying something you may regret.
