At a New Place after Moving

So that the stress of moving to a new place does not kill all the joy of living, you need to properly organize the process and plan the time. We are here to let you know where to start if the important day is less than a week away, and experts and travel gurus share useful tips and personal experiences. Before hiring the out of state movers check moving company reviews and ask for a moving Quote. Be prepared to save your money and download and print a moving checklist.

The first question is: DIY move or a moving company?

Many transport companies offer services not only for the transportation of things, but also for the assessment of their quantity and preparation for shipment. Yes, personal items, clothes and books will still have to be collected by yourself, but at least you will not have to suffer with furniture and large household appliances. The carriers also have services for the delivery of boxes and other necessary tools — you will not need to waste time and nerves on shopping trips. The alternative is to involve relatives and friends in the process: so you will have more time and enlist more moral support. It is better to send the children to their relatives, so that they can return to their new homes.

The easiest way to choose a transport company is with the help of recommendations from friends and a banal search on the Internet. Private traders with vans also offer their services — this is a cheaper option, but the various risks are higher here. When ordering a car, pay attention to how it is equipped. The van should not only correspond to the amount of cargo in terms of capacity, but also be prepared inside: have guides for furniture fasteners and the fasteners themselves (belts), non — slip floor, soft pads on the walls, ideally-a hydrolift for quick loading of heavy objects.

Soberly assess the number of things that need to be transported, and contact the chosen company: somewhere you need to order a car in advance, somewhere right on the day of moving. You will also be able to tell how long loading/unloading can take and how many movers you will need. If you are worried that you will not meet the time-limited tariff of the transport company, and the surcharge for an extra hour does not suit you, choose the complex tariffs that many carriers have: prices usually depend on the number of rooms in the apartment. This will also protect you from dishonest employees who can deliberately delay the time, and then persuade you to pay for a new hour cheaper past the cash register.

It is necessary to know exactly the scale of the “disaster” not only for the contract with transport workers: if you are not a minimalist, it is unlikely that you will have enough for a couple of evenings after work (when you are already tired) – it is better to take a day off for a couple of days.

Purchase packing materials

You will need a variety of packaging to get things to their destination safely. Basic set: boxes of different sizes, tape, scissors and bubble wrap. For packaging furniture and large appliances, you will need corrugated cardboard, stretch film and foam blocks, for small things and breakable things — plastic bags, foamed polyethylene and craft paper, and for clothing and textiles — vacuum bags. And don’t forget the marker to sign the boxes.

With this list, you can go to a hardware or hardware store. If this is not your option, then online stores and websites of carrier companies will help. The number of boxes without experience is difficult to calculate, so estimate how many you will need, and take with a decent margin.

Pack your things

There are two approaches to collecting things: by storage location or by item type (first the entire bedroom or first all the books from all the rooms). It is better to start with the things that are used least often and will definitely not be needed before moving; in the next group of boxes, load more necessary things, and leave the last few boxes for the last day — there you will put the most necessary things from this room. For example, if the child is staying with his grandmother before moving, you can start with the nursery and collect it all. Often not the most necessary things are stored in the living room and office. This also includes seasonal items: clothing, sports equipment. The first-aid kit and your favorite frying pan will go to the last batch.

In addition, moving is the most appropriate time to get rid of excess: the idea that you will not have to pay for the transportation of discarded or given things is motivating. Put aside the unnecessary and arrange something like a garage sale: throw a cry in groups specializing in the transfer of things in social networks-let people come and take what they need. There are also services that are ready to pick up unnecessary things in a crowd, then resell them at flea markets. Those things about which you doubt whether to leave them or not, it is also easier to put together: perhaps, in a new apartment, the decision will be easier to make.
