AC Maintenance Tips: Your Home Cooling System Needs TLC Too

If you live in a warm area, the last thing you want is for your AC to go out during the summer.

With summers becoming hotter than ever, you don’t want to be stuck in a heated home.

Luckily, it doesn’t take much work to keep your AC in shape. There are several small AC maintenance tasks that will help.

Use the five tips below to make sure your AC is ready for the summer.

1. Replace Your Air Filter

Yes, an AC does have an air filter. If you don’t keep it cleaned, then it can negatively impact the performance of your AC.

A clogged filter will block airflow and cause your AC to work harder. This means that you will get warmer rooms during summer and use up more electricity.

It’s a good idea to replace your filter once every couple of months during the summer months.

2. Clean the Coils

Because your coils are located outside, they get dirty when left on their own for too long. When dirt builds up, it stops them from running efficiently.

Unplug your unit and take the water hose to it. Hosing your AC down will clean off any dirt that is built up. One cleaning during the summer should do the trick.

3. Remove Debris

Yes, there is a grate on your AC that helps keep debris out. That doesn’t mean that nothing will ever get in. The chances are leaves will get in your AC unit during the fall from the trees losing leaves.

Unscrew your AC grate and check inside to find any debris. You can clean it out by hand or take a vacuum to it.

4. Clean Your Air Ducts

Have you looked at your air ducts to see how much dirt is on them? If you don’t keep them clean, you’ll be blowing dirt and dust into your home throughout the year.

Make sure you check and clean your air ducts regularly. This not only helps your AC works more efficiently but also keeps the air quality in your home at a safer level.

5. Get Regular Maintenance

There’s only so much you can do to make sure your AC is in working order. If you want to finish the job, hire a pro to come over and service your AC unit.

AC tune-ups will find all the things you may have missed and fix them for you. It isn’t necessary to do a tune-up often. Once a year is usually enough to keep your AC running smoothly.

Take AC Maintenance Seriously

Your AC is one of the most vital parts of your home. If you don’t take AC maintenance seriously, you’ll end up with a broken unit that will set you back a lot of money when you replace it.

Use the tips above to keep your AC in working order.

Once you have your AC maintenance out of the way, you can focus on the rest of your home. Head back to our blog to see our latest home improvement tips.
