Whether you’ve purchased women’s human hair wigs online for the first time or have worn them for a couple of years, it’s always good to know what you should avoid to not only keep your wigs looking healthy, but prolonging their lifespan. This blog will look at five things to avoid with human hair wigs.

Wearing the wrong size

This should go without saying, but it’s important that you not wear the wrong-sized wig and find one that is suitable for your head. Measure your head size and circumference and make sure your wig is at least similar or close to the same size. If you wear a wig that doesn’t fit your head, it will not only feel uncomfortable, but will not be natural looking either. If you don’t want people to know you’re wearing a wig, this isn’t ideal at all.

Not washing your wigs

Just because it’s not your real hair, it doesn’t mean you should not wash your wig. After all, if it’s a human hair wig, it is just like your natural hair which means it requires a wash here and there. You wouldn’t leave your own hair unwashed for months, would you? We recommend washing your wig once every few weeks or so to keep it looking soft, shiny and healthy.

Shampooing with regular shampoo

While you can technically wash your wig with regular shampoo, it’s not the best idea. There are two reasons for this. The first is that shampoos strip the oils and moisture from the hair on your wig, so it’s important to not overuse shampoo because unlike your natural hair, the hair on your wig won’t be rehydrated with natural oils. The second reason is that some shampoos contain silicone which can result in the hair on your wig shedding. Instead, opt for shampoos that are specifically designed for hair systems and make sure not to overuse it. Once a week should be fine.

Sleeping with your wig

While some people may prefer to sleep with their wigs on, this is not ideal. Because of the length and weight of the hair a wig has, hair shedding can occur especially when one tosses and turns in their sleep during the night. There is a way to get around which is wrapping your wig inside a silk or satin bonnet. Alternatively, you can sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase. These materials reduce friction and prevent hair shedding. But if you don’t have either, it’s best to take your wig off before sleeping.

Overusing heat styling products

It’s important not to overuse any heat styling products. Whether you’re using a hair straightener, curling iron or blow dryer, too much heat can result in your hair becoming brittle in addition to causing split ends and discolored hair. Instead, minimize your use of heat styling products as much as possible and opt for lower or cold temperatures when it comes to blow dryers.
