10 Clever Organizing Hacks For Hard-to-Store Items At Your Home

In a world with Marie Kondo, we have all been inspired to get on top of our storage game. Storing items in our home, especially items that we don’t necessarily use often but also need to keep, can seem like an overwhelming task.

But without proper storage, these items will quickly fill up your garage or extra closet space. Luckily, there are some clever ways to store these inconvenient items without a ton of extra hassle.

If you’re in need a clever way to store items like camping gear, holiday décor, or extension chords, then you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading to see our 10 organizing hacks for even your hardest-to-store items!

Extension Chords

Extensions chords can be a hassle to store. Especially when you go to use them, and they are all tangled together in a big knot.

To help keep them organized, wrap them up and slide them through a paper towel or toilet paper tubes before you put them all together in a drawer. You can even label the tubes with the length of the chord inside to make finding the perfect extension a breeze.

Out-Of-Season Clothing

It’s common to not have the closet space for all of your seasonal clothing items. Especially items that are bulky and take up a lot of space.

Consider adding a second hanging clothing rod that attaches to the top rod with a chain. You can attach the chain with some screws or S-hooks.

This is a great way to create multi-level storage and double your closet space. For more tips on storing clothes check out this article.

Belts Or Scarves

Another part of your wardrobe that can be difficult to store is belts and scarves. Luckily, you can easily turn a wooden hanger into a belt/scarf holder to solve this storing problem.

All you need is some cup hooks and a wooden hanger. Screw the cup hooks into the wooden hanger and use this to conveniently store belts, scarves, or even small handbags.

Tiny Hardware

We all seem to have those drawers that are filled with tiny hardware such as nails, screws, and brackets. These drawers are not only frustrating since it’s hard to ever find what you need, but they are also a waste of valuable space.

Consider using an ice cube tray to store your lose tools, or really any sort of divider. You can organize each little section to contain a specific type of hardware for easy access in the future.

Or you can also ditch the drawer altogether and store the tools in little zippered craft bags. These can easily be hung on a pegboard in the garage so you can quickly find what you are looking for.

Pots And Pans

No one likes digging through the dreaded pots and pans cabinet to find the pan they are looking for. This is often loud and leads to things falling out on the floor.

You can avoid this hassle altogether by choosing to hang your pots and pans instead. Consider making your own rack or purchasing one from the store that suits your kitchen specific needs.

Suitcases

Suitcases are something we all seem to have that take up a lot of extra space. They often get thrown in the garage or the attic where they are likely to be damaged from humidity.

There are a variety of different storage options for your suitcases that don’t involve sticking them in a place they may get damaged. Consider installing a shelf high up in your closet to get the suitcases up off the floor and out of sight.

If you have the space underneath your bed, you can also stick them under here to keep them out of your way. If you’re able to, try zipping your smaller suitcases inside the larger one for even more condensed storage.

Holiday Decorations

Things like string lights and an artificial tree can really become a burden when trying to store. Instead of throwing all of your holiday lights in a bag or box, where they are bound to become a tangled mess, take each strand and wrap it around a piece of cardboard.

Make small slits in the side of the cardboard so that the chords stay in place. Then you can take your neatly wrapped light chords and stack them in a box for easy access during the next holiday season.

For proper tree-storage consider buying a tree storage bag or a plastic tub so that you don’t have to worry about your tree getting damaged.

Camping Gear

Consider storing your camping gear in some extra-large Ziploc bags. This will keep the items dry and well-sealed for easy storage in your garage or attic.

Storing things like your sleeping bag, extra blankets, and even your tent in a big bag makes your next camping trip a breeze since all you’ll need to do is grab these bags and go.

Put your items into the bag and push out all of the air to condense them to their smallest, and easiest to store form.

Mail

Stacks of paper clutter laying around is not only unpleasant to look at, but it also makes it hard to find important documents. Buying a mounted organizer can easily solve this problem by getting your mail off the counter and into organized sections on the wall.

You can separate your mail into urgent mail, magazines, ads, and coupons so that everyone in your household can easily locate what they need.

Hair Styling Tools

Hair styling tools can add a lot of clutter in your bathroom drawers or cabinets. The chord either gets tangled up or ends up being in the way.

Installing plastic hooks on the inside of your cabinet door can easily solve this problem and create the perfect place to hang your tool from.
