Los Angeles, California, is best known for its sunny beaches, quirky culture, and movie-star glitz. Whether you’re planning to enjoy one of these aspects or all three, the city has something for everybody. Get ready to pack your bags — here’s a quick guide to the neighborhoods around LA along with tips for getting the most out of your visit.

Malibu

If you’ve come to California for the sun and surf, Malibu offers the ultimate beach experience. There’s a reason why celebrities live in many oceanfront homes overlooking the Pacific in this area, and that’s the gorgeous views and stunning sunsets. Surfrider Beach is reputed to have the best surfing waves anywhere, so if you’ve always wanted to learn how to surf, this is the place. If you prefer dry land, you can hike up and down the 23 miles of shoreline to enjoy the rock formations and varying landscapes.

Hollywood

If you can’t leave LA without seeing the iconic Hollywood sign, the easiest way to see it is to visit Lake Hollywood Park on Canyon Lake Drive. This park is dog-friendly and has play areas for the kids. If you don’t mind crowds of tourists, don’t miss the Hollywood Walk of Fame on the famed Hollywood Boulevard. While you’re in town, you can enjoy a sightseeing tour and visit the many museums, shops, and amazing restaurants. Or, you can head just up the road to Universal Studios Hollywood.

Montebello

After the glitz and crowds of Hollywood, perhaps you’d like something more low-key. Try spending a day in Montebello. Families will enjoy visiting the Montebello Barnyard Zoo or hiking the trails in the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area. Adults can try their luck at the Commerce Casino, which specializes in card games like Poker, Blackjack, and Baccarat rather than the flashy slots found at so many other casinos. It’s also a great place to stay during your time in LA, thanks to its many top-quality hotels.

Anaheim

No Los Angeles travel guide would be complete without Anaheim, home of Disneyland. Although Disneyland is by far the largest tourist attraction in Anaheim, there are other pleasures to find, such as Anaheim Brewery. Adventurous children can learn new skills at the Vans Skatepark or fly through the air with the greatest of ease with lessons at SwingIt Trapeze. You can also learn to fly at the Flightdeck, which offers lessons and the opportunity to experience a dogfight in a realistic flight simulator.

Santa Monica

Round out your trip with a visit to Santa Monica. You can get your fill of ocean and mountain views at its various beaches, such as Palisades Park, Santa Monica State Beach, and Muscle Beach. You must also visit the Santa Monica Pier. You’ll find much more than a lovely ocean view — it also has carnival games, a Ferris wheel, roller coaster, carousel, and even an aquarium.

In a populous city such as LA, you’ll find find a lot of attractions to keep you and your family busy. To get the most out of your visit, make sure to head out of the central city and explore its surrounding neighborhoods, too.
