Let’s all start with a confession: who here has used poison to clean their homes? No, it doesn’t mean wiping your counters with rat poison and it doesn’t mean spraying the curtains with bug spray. However, it’s not too far off what we’ve actually been doing at home: using toxic products to keep our homes clean.

If you’ve been using non-natural store-bought cleaning products, then you’ve probably been filling the air with nasty chemicals that could adversely affect not just your health, but the health of your children and pets. Not only that, but you’ve probably poured hundreds and thousands into cleaning products that have perfectly viable natural alternatives. Want to save money and your own well-being? Then here are a couple of considerations to keep in mind when you next do your Spring clean.

Natural Cleaning Is Better for the Air

If you or your child have respiratory issues, then using those bug sprays and air fresheners aren’t going to do you any good. Non-toxic cleaners such as Better Life products are not only better for the environment, they’re also not filled with chemicals that pollute the air you breathe. In fact, the air quality inside our homes can be a lot worse than the quality outside due to the amount of toxic chemicals we pump into it. If you want to save you and your family from worrisome health issues, then make sure you’re using natural cleaners that don’t fill the air with nasty chemicals.

Toxic Products Are More Expensive

If you live a frugal lifestyle, then chances are you’ve probably already thought about using household items such as baking soda to clean your home. However, if you’re still relying on store-bought cleaning products and sprays, then you might be eating up your budget faster than you think. Buying the items required to make your own natural cleaning products is a lot cheaper than buying anything in a spray bottle off the shelf. Here’s a cheap recipe for an all-purpose cleaning spray that is free from nasty chemicals.

We’ll be using white vinegar as the base for our cleaning solution. It’s amazing at destroying grease and stains, it breaks down nasty smells and it dissolves stubborn dirt. It does smell a little and not everyone enjoys the acidic smell, but that’s why we’ll add some essential oils. Use something like eucalyptus for its antimicrobial properties, meaning it inhibits the growth of microorganisms that could cause diseases and viruses to spread. Lastly, we’ll add some baking soda for its powerful stain-removing properties.

All you need is half a cup of white vinegar, 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda, a couple of drops of the eucalyptus essential oils, and a spray bottle to contain it all. Then simply fill it with water, give it a good shake to mix all the ingredients and you’re left with a powerful non-toxic cleaner to use on everything from kitchen counters to windows. It’s incredibly cheap to make, you can make huge batches, and all you need is an empty spray bottle to store it.

Natural Products Are Safer

One of the biggest issues with expensive cleaning products is that they’re sometimes a little too potent for your own good. Natural cleaners are made to be safe for children and adults to use, meaning they don’t have any toxicity and need to meet extremely strict standards to even be considered market-safe. For instance, cleaners with high levels of toxicity can sometimes cause irritation to skin or eyes if used incorrectly or during an accident, and this can lead to chemical burns or corrosion on the outer layers of your skin.

As mentioned before, green cleaners are also much more friendly to the environment which is important if you’re trying to adopt a lifestyle that’s friendly to the environment. There’s a common misconception that going green is actually more expensive, but as shown in the section above, natural cleaning products are both cheaper to buy and make, but still just as effective at cleaning your home as the cleaning products off the supermarket shelf.

Making the Switch

It’s unreasonable to ask you to throw away all of your expensive products immediately. It’s a lot of money that you’ve spent and seeing it go to waste isn’t the best idea. Even worse, if you pour them out or throw them in the bit then they might do more harm than using them the intended way. Instead, continue using your cleaning products but slowly switch them out for natural ones. If you still feel weird using your chemical products, then simply dispose of them.

Once the spray bottles are empty, give them a good clean and a rinse then start filling them up with your natural products instead. It’s important you get all of the toxic chemicals and residue out of the bottle before you fill it with your own mix. Use hot water and a small cup of vinegar or baking soda to rinse out the insides. It will help remove both the smell and residue so you’re left with a clean bottle to reuse as you see fit. Alternatively, you could just fill it with a small amount of the cleaning solution you plan to fill it with and give it a good shake, then pouring it out and repeating this procedure once or twice before rinsing it with hot water.

Final Words

So if you want to remain clean and safe in your own house, consider switching to non-toxic cleaners. Not only is it a fantastic way to save money on your household expenses, it’s a great way to ensure that you and your family don’t develop health issues in the future due to the chemicals that you’re exposed to by using regular cleaning products. It doesn’t take long to switch over, it’s easy to make your own cleaning products, and you can make them in batches to save yourself a fortune every year. Don’t neglect the power of going green and make the switch today!
