As the summer is approaching, people would be grateful to welcome the sun, heat, and the light it brings. However, as time goes by, you would not like too much heat coming into our homes or offices. Apart from the heat, you would likely be exposing yourself and your family to the UV rays (ultra-violet) which in excess might not be good for your skin and body. Using an air conditioning or cooling system can be a good option to keep the temperatures down inside your household. However, you would have to be wary about the energy consumption and the recurring cost that goes into the same.

This means you would have to look at alternative options to keep the heat to a bare minimum. There are various options that you can ponder in a bid to keep the temperatures down. Among these options, you can choose to look at awnings, window films, blinds and shades, and blackout fabric. Each of them is unique in its way and has its pros and cons. We look at some of the best options available so that you can choose the best one that would suit your home or office the best.

Awnings

It should be taken into account that the use of window awnings can end up reducing the temperature by about 60% – 80%. In the earlier days, metal awnings were used to cover windows either partially or fully. However, these days some awnings can be custom designed to give you full coverage if necessary. Moreover, these days one can notice that they are made with different materials. These materials give you not just extended durability but also reduce maintenance costs to a great level as well. Retractable awnings made of polyvinyl or acrylic are said to be water repellent too and withstand different weather conditions for greater durations.

Awnings that are woven tightly and are opaque tend to dispel the sunlight better than other options that you have. You may also consider the synthetic fabric that is as reliable as well in terms of durability. They do not fade easily thus retain color to longer periods. In case you wish not to use them during at a specific time of the day, year or season you can easily retract them.

Window Film

Protecting your house from the heat of the sun with a window film can be a good option too. Heat reducing window films are known to reduce UV penetration as well as reduce the heat by 80% at your homes or offices. The advantage that you get out of using a window film is that you get the same view as you used to get before. Moreover, you can save on the energy bills to a great extent. However, the installation cost of the films can be higher when compared to awnings. These films can be purchased, stuck to windows and used on windows. They come in different colors that give you a variety of visibility levels either from the outside or inside.

Blinds and Shades

The use of blinds and shades is one of the lesser-used options although they are effective in reducing heat and UV radiation. This is because the cost involved in cleaning and maintaining them is quite high. Allergens and dust can easily accumulate in these blinds and shades that are installed inside of the house. This can happen if they are not maintained properly. However, these come in a variety of colors, designs, and textures and can be picked as per your choice. The downside of using blinds and shades is the fact that you lose the view that you would otherwise get with awnings and window films.

Blackout Fabric

This is also one of the lesser-used options as it can block out 100% of the heat and light from the sun. High-quality linings and fabrics can be used for this purpose in the windows of homes and offices. However, total loss of light would again mean that you would be spending money on energy bills as your use of light would increase. These installations are typically used inside of the homes or offices to control heat and light emitted by the sun.

So, when it comes to the reduction of heat and UV radiations from the sun the awnings can be a better choice when compared in terms of price and durability. However, it is for each one of you to decide on which one you would prefer to use at your home or office. This depends totally on the feasibility, requirement and the budget that you have in mind. Comparing the price of these options that we have mentioned can be a good option. It would enable you to figure out which one among these you can choose to have installed at your home.
