The job market really has never been as competitive as it is today. When you’ve applied for dozens of jobs and heard nothing from most of them and had a handful of unsuccessful interviews for the other, it can be incredibly discouraging. However, you don’t have to put up with that kind of situation. The truth is that a lot of people simply don’t have the skills that a lot of employers are looking for. Sure, you might have some great skills in one area or another, but modern employers are looking for candidates who are versatile and able to move between different tasks with ease. With that in mind, here are some of the skills that every employer will be looking for when you’re on the job hunt.

Design

In the internet age, there’s nothing more important to many businesses than being able to grab the attention of customers as quickly as possible. The most effective way to do this is through visual images, which means that design is a skill that’s highly in demand. Because of that, taking an Adobe Illustrator course to improve your design skills is pretty much invaluable. It might seem as though this is a rather specific skill, but it’s important enough to pretty much every industry in the modern age that most employers will be on the lookout for it.

Communication

If you can’t communicate with people, then you’re never going to make it any industry. For one thing, you need to be able to talk to your colleagues and collaborate with them in order to work as effectively as possible. But this also applies to customers. You should be able to write in a clear and convincing manner as well as talking to them face to face. Without the ability to communicate, it doesn’t matter how many other skills you have; you’re never going to be able to properly demonstrate them to an employer or to anyone else.

Marketing

Modern marketing functions in a significantly different way to the marketing of the past. Where marketing was previously limited to advertising campaigns, marketing in the internet age is a much more holistic process. It involves talking to customers on social media, writing blog posts about the behind-the-scenes going on at your business, and plenty of other online methods of direct and indirect marketing. Having a decent knowledge of things like social media, SEO, and other online marketing methods are something that just about every employer is going to be looking out for whenever they pick up a resume. Because of that, you should take the time to get acquainted with as many different forms of online and offline marketing as possible.

Sure, not all roles are going to require these exact skills, and plenty of roles will require a lot of different skills. But almost every job that you apply for in the modern era will require at least some combination of these kinds of skills. Without them, it’s likely that your application is going to wind up getting discarded almost immediately.
