It’s one of those annoying things about life that when you’re off having a great time on vacation, it seems to be the perfect time for things to go wrong back at home. Burglaries, house fires, floods – they all seem to show up when you least expect them, which is why when you’re going on vacation, you should take the time to think about your property first.

Here are some important things you should do before taking that big trip:

Enlist a Watchperson

If you want to have peace of mind and ensure that should anything go wrong at home, it’s dealt with quickly, asking a friend, neighbor or close family member to keep a watchful eye on your property while you’re away is always a good move. They don’t have to stay there, although that would be good, but if you can persuade them to check in once a day, with bribes if necessary, there’ll be less chance that disaster will strike.

Don’t Publicize Your Trip on Facebook

You might be super excited about your trip to the Caribbean or want everyone to know that you’re flying off to Europe for the summer, but it really isn’t smart to advertise the fact on Facebook. You never know who is looking at your social media or what their intentions are, and by letting everyone and his dog know that you’ll be going away, you are inviting criminals to try and break in.

Set Your Security Alarm

You should never if possible leave your home unsecured when you leave for an extended period. As well as ensuring that all of your doors and windows are secure and locked, you should also look into installing home security systems and ensure that your alarm is set before you leave, if you want to make your property as secure as it can be.

Switch Everything Off

If you don’t want to come back to find that your home has been gutted by fire or your ceiling has caved in due to flooding, take the time to do a sweep of the house, turning off taps and unplugging all of your appliances as you go. Most of the time, nothing will go wrong, but there is always a chance that an appliance that is plugged in could catch fire, so it really isn’t worth the risk.

Leave the Curtains Open

Many people think that closing the curtains when they head off on holiday is the smart thing to do. They think it will stop thieves seeing what they have available, but it can also stop neighbors from noticing any changes or the presence of people who should not be inside the house, which is why it is usually better to leave the curtains open.

Move Your Spare Key

If you keep your spare key under the plant pot or in one of those fake rocks that aren’t convincing anyone, while you’re on vacation, you should remove that key and leave it with a trusted person, so that if a would-be thief realises you are away, it will be just a not more difficult for them to act on that information.
