Ask different people what holistic health means and you will probably get varied responses. However, defining what a healthy, holistic approach to improving your life is need not be a mystery. Put simply, a holistic life refers to a life characterized by wise choices about all that is important to you and the ones you love.

It’s all about the bigger picture, being mindful about all aspects of your life and appreciating the impact of all your actions. Your approach to life is reflected in how you impact yourself, others and the earth by your beliefs, thoughts, actions, and lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise.

It is easy to mistake a holistic approach to a healthful lifestyle for spirituality because spiritually enlightened individuals tend to be further along the journey as they are more mindful of the impact of their actions. They appreciate their role in the bigger picture and the fact that their soul, mind and body are connected and need to operate in sync.

So while a holistic approach to life certainly encompasses spiritually, holism has been seen to demonstrate a profound understanding that actions are perceived by your body, by others and by the entire universe. At home and at school, you were taught morality and ethics, but like many, you may not have been taught how to live a meaningful life free of materialism.

A holistic approach to your soul, mind and body not only allows you to enjoy true health and wellness, it also improves your relationships by fostering love, understanding and patience. In general, it helps improve your mindfulness in daily life. There are a number of things you can do to help you live a healthful, holistic life.

Here are a few:

  • Have a healthy diet – Think of your body as a vessel that you ought to care for and nourish. Watch it thrive by fueling it with a diet that is clean and organic. Use green tea, copious fruit, nuts, vegetables and a lot of water to detoxify your body.
  • Favor recyclable energy – Your actions impact not only you, but other people and the planet as a whole. In addition to using recyclable energy at every opportunity and avoiding wastefulness, share your awareness with others and your energy with those in need of it.
  • Seek continual self-improvement – The good news is that opportunities for you to grow are bountiful. When you’re open to learning and experiencing new things, your knowledge increases as you become less judgmental. So take every chance you have to read good books, check out online articles, go for courses and grow your knowledge.
  • Surround yourself with like-minded people – Spend your time with others who value holism and learn from them. This might mean attending a conference, taking a course, going for yoga classes, etc.

By adding these and more practices into your daily life, you begin to gradually experience the joy that comes with building up all the major aspects of your being: your body, mind and soul.
