Natural exfoliants can be found in many things Mother Nature provides, from seeds to nut shells to sea salts. When making exfoliating soap, consider what the soap will be used for to determine what exfoliant would be best. For feet, use hard exfoliants such as sea salts or seeds. Use gentle exfoliants like oatmeal or wheatgerm for facial soaps.

Milk and Honey Exfoliating Soap

Ingredients:

1 c. oatmeal (do not use quick-cooking oatmeal)

2 lbs. shea butter melt-and-pour suspension soap

2 tbsp. buttermilk powder

2 tbsp. hot water

1 tbsp. honey

200 drops vanilla essential oil

Instructions:

  1. Lightly coat square molds with sunflower oil. A sectioned brownie pan is the perfect mold.
  2. Use a large knife to chop the oatmeal so the flakes are about half the original size.
  3. Evenly sprinkle 1 tsp. oatmeal into each mold.
  4. Cut the soap into cubes, then melt the soap in a double boiler (or use a large pan, filled half full with water and set a smaller pan inside the larger pan).
  5. While the soap is melting, mix the buttermilk powder and the hot water in a small bowl. Using a cheesecloth, strain the buttermilk mixture into another bowl. This should remove any lumps.
  6. Once the soap is melted, add the buttermilk mixture and honey. Stir gently to completely incorporate. Stir in ¾ c. oatmeal until it is evenly distributed. Add the vanilla essential oil.
  7. Slowly pour the soap into the molds. Spray the surface of the soaps with rubbing alcohol. This eliminates any bubbles from forming.
  8. Allow the soap to cool and fully harden before removing from the molds. This takes approximately one or two hours.

*This recipe yields approximately eight bars. The recipe can be divided to make smaller batches.
