Discipline and Organization Principles for Small Business Owners

Discipline is so important to cultivate as a small business owner. If you don’t do the work, you won’t get paid. In most cases, small business owners have to hunt. As a result, they only eat what they’re able to kill. In order to make this process successful, you have to do the work to stay ahead. Consider these four ways to make it happen.

1. Eliminate distractions.
If you’re someone who can’t listen to music and work at the same time, fight the urge to turn on music. The most successful people are intentional about becoming laser-focused when it’s time to get work done. Multi-tasking can also be a major distraction as well. If you’re on a conference call, don’t try to work on important client reports at the same time. You’re bound to make a mistake that way. Create an environment that’s conducive to getting work done and commit yourself to the process.

2. Use a timer.
A timer also helps you to keep track of how fast or slow you’re going. Create a goal for yourself regarding each task. If you know that a specific task takes about twenty minutes to complete, use the timer on your phone to get things done. When you don’t keep track of the time, it’s very easy to waste it. Time is money and you don’t want to waste money so don’t waste time.

3. Incorporate others.
In many cases, when a woman becomes a mother, she feels a different sense of responsibility and is able to work harder. The reason is that she’s not just working for herself anymore. Now, she’s working for the well-being of her child. The same concept can be applied to business. If you run a catering business and hire staff members, a food photographer in new york and other personnel, you’re more likely to focus on getting your work done because you don’t want to let others down. If you’re currently working as a solopreneur, begin the process of incorporating other people into your business to expand and remain accountable.

4. Incentivize the process.
When you do a good job and complete major tasks, reward yourself. Consider some of your favorite pastimes or items. If you’ve been eyeing the latest purses from your favorite store or you’d like to spend a nice, long day at the spa, work hard so that you can reward yourself with these experiences. The more you follow this process and reward yourself, you’re more likely to commit to creating a lifestyle that satisfies and excites you.
