Owning a pet can bring so much joy to your family’s life, but did you know your lifestyle, location and other factors must form part of the decision for choosing the perfect pet? Knowing the type of animal that will fit with your home life is crucial, so we’ve included some helpful information below that will enable you to make the right choice for both your family and the animal.

A Horse is a Horse

Many children, and even adults, dream of owning a horse. However, while they look easy to care for in movies and on TV, the reality can be a little different. You need plenty of pasture for them to graze, but you also need additional feed, equipment such as saddles, hoof boots, brushes and a whole host of equine care items. Additionally, horses require ongoing veterinary and dental care, as well as hoof care with a competent farrier. Horses can be the most rewarding pet you ever own, but they do require a great deal of space and plenty of time and money.

In the Dog House

Dog ownership has increased by 29 percent in the past decade, and it’s clear to see why.  They are loyal, loving, and make exceptional family pets. However, the right dog for your family can largely depend on your location and lifestyle. If you live in a high-rise apartment, it’s less likely that a dog is going to suit.

Dogs need plenty of room to run around, a fenced section, and grass. While there are hundreds of different breeds – some that require less maintenance than others – a dog is going to be more suitable for someone in a suburban, urban, or rural location.

Feline Friends

Cats are one of the most popular pet options for a range of households, with over 95 million domesticated cats in the US alone. Whether you live in a suburban, rural or even urban area, you are sure to find that a cat can provide you with lots of love and affection. While many breeds of cat – particularly the domestic tabby – love to roam, hunt, and run rampant, you can still buy cats that are perfect homebodies.

Ragdolls, American Shorthairs, and Persians prefer to cuddle up on your sofa rather than hunt for prey. While Persians and Ragdolls do require a substantial amount of maintenance given the length of their fur, they adapt quickly to litterboxes and have minimal desire to search for greener pastures. Therefore, cats are undoubtedly the most suitable pet for a range of households.

Off the Scale

Reptile ownership in the United States is on the rise. Millions of people are replacing dog as man’s best friend with lizards, snakes, frogs, and turtles. While they aren’t cuddly critters you can tuck into bed with you at night, they are a low maintenance pet that’s suitable for anyone – whether you’re in the city or country and can provide plenty of enjoyment.

The Initial setup of a reptile’s enclosure can be costly. You need to factor in heat lamps, a suitably sized cage and plenty of books on how to care for them. However, once you’ve established the correct setup, they are affordable and rewarding to own.

Selecting the perfect pet for your family is crucial as not all pets will be suitable for all environments. Consider one of the many pet options above and reap the rewards of endless love and loyalty.
