The kitchen is my favourite room in the house. I think most people out there would agree that it’s the heart of any home. It’s where I experiment with new meal ideas, and socialise with family and friends. I like to take pride with how it looks, and eventually, I’d love a big farmhouse kitchen (don’t we all?) Unfortunately, replacing the entire kitchen suite costs a fortune. None of us have that kind of money lying around, and some of you may live in a rental flat. If that’s the case, how can you upgrade your kitchen on a budget?

  1. Lighting

The first thing you can do is improve the lighting. Interior designers use lighting tricks all the time to create a new ambience or feeling in the home. It’s something we can all learn, and implement quite easily. In the kitchen, for example, you can use small spot lights underneath your cabinets. LED Par30 bulbs work perfectly for this, and you can use them to create track lighting. It’s a subtle glow that provides a nicer ambience, and acts as task lighting for when you’re cooking.

  1. Paint the cupboards

Let’s face it, few of us have money to burn on expensive kitchen cabinets and a new suite. But, here’s a little trick you can use instead. Rather than replacing the cabinets and cupboards, simply paint them! It creates the effect of brand new kitchenware instantly. I often find that a pastel shade, like faded blues, greens and pinks work really well here. You can use your imagination, and choose whichever colours you like.

  1. Add a rug

Wooden floors or tiling often look stunning in a kitchen. Unfortunately, they can get a little cold, and they do make a larger room feel empty. You can remedy that with a simple rug. Placed over the cold floor, it instantly brings warmth and texture to the room. It adds another layer to the kitchen, and provides a softer, warmer aesthetic to the kitchen. You can pick any style you like, but warm, dark colours tend to work best here. I’ll leave the rest up to you!

  1. Upgrade the tap and hardware

Again, it’s unlikely we can all afford a complete kitchen renovation. But, you can replace the little things that make it feel like a makeover. For instance, you can replace your existing tap at a fairly low cost. Choose a new style, and bring a little modernism into the kitchen. Meanwhile, you can replace the hardware for another makeover look. I’m talking about the cupboard knobs and door handles mostly. A simple upgrade will make a lot of difference.

  1. Tiles or splashback

Finally, why not create a colourful splashback behind your oven? It quickly adds life and colour to an empty space. It will only take you a weekend (I promise) to tile the wall, and it can certainly be done on a budget.

Try these tricks for yourself, and let me know how you got on! Have you got any other great kitchen upgrades to share with me?
