Assertive and Confident: 5 Secrets to Improving Your Self-Image

We often focus a great deal about what others think about us: our friends, family members, teachers, employers, our boss and coworkers, our significant other, and even strangers we’ll never see again. What we fail to realize is that the way we feel about ourselves is also important. Fortunately, there are ways to improve your self-image.

  1. Stop comparing yourself to others.

Probably one of the worst things a majority of us do is compare ourselves to others. While we do occasionally think to ourselves that we are better than a certain person, more often than not, we get jealous of the qualities of others, wishing we were them instead.

Making comparisons and being jealous are both toxic habits that are difficult to break, but the sooner we can learn to accept that others are different from us (and that we are different too, in good ways), the better we can lead a path to a more confident lifestyle.

  1. Embrace your imperfections.

When we have what we consider imperfections, what do we try to do? Cover them up. Other times, we often point them out to other people in hopes that they will not comment on it first.

However, the best way to go about imperfections is to accept them and see them as things that make us different. Most of the time, our imperfections aren’t imperfections at all, and the only harm they cause is on our self-esteem psychologically.

  1. Let go of people who only put you down.

If you have people in your life that are highly critical or demeaning to your self-esteem, let them know that what they say to you is hurtful. (Sometimes people don’t realize that they are being mean, especially if they frequently crack jokes.) If they fail to change, let them go from your life.

Instead, surround yourself by people who are caring, loving, and supportive and don’t judge you for your flaws. Having people who are honest to you while still uplifting your spirit are the best people you will ever meet.

  1. Work on your mental health.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, there is a consistent cycle of low self-esteem and mental illness, making it difficult to know which causes which. However, many find that when they focus on healing one, they can heal the other.

That said, if you can’t improve your self-image directly, it may be best that you instead focus on healing your current mental health state. To feel confident is to be happy overall, but one cannot be happy in every area of their life if their mental state is not where it should be.

Here are ways you can work on yourself mentally:

  • Get counseling.
  • Go to a doctor for medication or other forms of treatment.
  • Notice toxic thinking and bad habits.
  • Pay attention to how you treat others.
  • Engage in self-care.
  • Work less and play more.
  1. Fix the physical characteristics you don’t like about yourself.

Unfortunately, there are just some parts of us that we will never fully accept. We can try hard for years to improve aspects of our appearance only to find that they only continue to hinder our happiness.
