The Biggest Wedding Trends of 2018

With websites like Azazie and all of their wedding apparel and planning sites like The Knot and Wedding Wire, it seems that wedding planning would be a breeze. After couples get engaged and start thinking about everything they have to plan, though, they find that it’s not quite so easy to do. With each person having their own taste and style, it can be difficult to get a wedding completely planned. If you and your fiancé don’t already know what you want, keeping up with the current trends can help inspire you and give you ideas for your wedding.

These are some of the biggest wedding trends of 2018 to help you get your wedding planning underway:

Décor

In years past, many couples used canopies and lights hung above the chairs, tables, and dance floor as decoration for their celebration. This year, though, couples are straying away from the fabric canopies and turning to something a little more green—fresh flowers and plants, hanging from the ceiling, lining the aisles, and being displayed as centerpieces. Many couples are even choosing to replace flowers with potted plants and bouquets with one or a few long-stemmed leaves. If you’re not into live, potted plants, some couples are choosing to use balloon arches as an alternative to living décor.

Dresses

For many brides, the dress is one of the most important aspects of the wedding. Brides want to feel beautiful and special. With so many different types of dresses, though, it can be difficult to narrow them down and pick out the perfect one. Keeping up with trends is a great way to get an idea of what dresses are in and find something you like.

This year, one of the biggest trends with wedding dresses is in the sleeves—many brides are opting for dresses that have long, flowing, or unique sleeves that add personality to the dress. Another popular trend is choosing dresses with color—brides are straying from the classic white and ivory dresses and opting for dresses with color. Whether it be a slight hint of blush pink or gold color or a full-on pattern with multiple colors in it, it’s in right now.

Music

Most couples hire a DJ or a band to perform music at their wedding, and that isn’t changing. Some couples are even hiring both to collaborate and work together. What changes and trends the most, though, are the songs that couples choose to play. If you’re having trouble choosing the perfect playlist, check out some of this year’s most popular songs:

  • Perfect by Ed Sheeran – This radio hit is one of the most romantic songs of 2018 and perfect for a first dance.
  • Havana by Camila Cabello – The point of a dance floor is to get people dancing, and what better way than with this popular beat?
  • What Lovers Do by Maroon 5 – The song talks about lovers, it’s fun and upbeat, and it’s by Maroon 5…no wonder it’s a favorite for weddings.
  • Dancing in the Moonlight by Toploader – Although it was released well before now, the song is a popular tune that gets people moving and feeling good.
  • Fresh Eyes by Andy Grammer – The story told in the lyrics is heart melting. We all hope to fall in love with our sweetie over and over again. Plus the tune is fun for moving.

Registries/Gifts

Traditionally, couples have registered at certain stores or on certain sites to let guests know what they want and need for their new life together. But that’s all changing this year. Although traditional registries are still as popular as ever, more and more couples are asking for cash. They’re asking for donations to a fund for a honeymoon or adventure, or for donations to put towards a down payment on aa home.

The Wedding Party

Traditionally, brides and grooms would ask sisters and brothers, best friends, former roommates, or sorority and fraternity connections to participate in the wedding party. Nieces and nephews were also traditionally invited to participate as flower girls and ring bearers. That’s all changing, though. As of this year, the dynamic of the wedding party is changing.

One of the biggest changes is that brides and grooms are having co-ed wedding parties—brides are inviting both bridesmaids and bridesmen, and grooms are inviting both groomsmen and grooms-women to participate. Another big change is that many couples are asking grandmothers to act as flower girls, giving them a special role to play in the wedding.
