Do You Need to Recharge Your AC with Refrigerant

Even if you feel like it’s a bit too early in the year to worry about your AC, you should know that dealing with potential damage is best done early, as soon as possible. Additionally, performing maintenance or repairs on your AC now has two clear benefits. First of all, it will be done much quicker, seeing how the demand for AC repair is fairly low this time of the year. Secondly, you will be able to discover any failings well before you need to actually use the AC, which gives you plenty of time to repair it. Just make sure that you work with licensed and qualified AC technicians.

One of the most common issues with AC units is not so much a repair, as it is a problem. Loss of refrigerant can occur either as a result of a damage or through the normal use of AC over time. Just like any other problem with the AC, it can present itself mildly at first, seen through an increased electricity bill, but if left untreated, over time it can result in significant damage to your AC unit.

Before You Assume Your Refrigerant Is Low

Even though you may think that any kind of decreased cooling output from your AC is the sign of low refrigerant levels, it is not always the case. There are a few things that could be causing your AC to perform sub-optimally. The first and the most common issue are the air filters.

As you have probably heard many times before, air filters need to be cleaned or changed about once a month. This is because they collect dust, germs, and everything else. The aim of the filter is to purify your air. However, if it is not cleaned, your air filter will not only stop cleaning your air, it can also obstruct the air flow which results in noticeably worse performance of your AC. You can actually solve this problem yourself. Simply open your AC unit and locate your air filter. Don’t be surprised if it is dirty since they need to be changed or cleaned once a month.

If cleaning your air filters hasn’t solved your problem, you should also check the air intake for any obstructions. Whether it is the outside unit, the ducts themselves or the inside unit, your air intake needs to be unobstructed to ensure a steady flow of air and optimal performance of your AC.

Signs that Your Refrigerant Is Low

There is one clear sign that your refrigerant is leaking and that you will need to call in some AC technicians to repair your AC unit is the icing around the condensation coils or on the pipes which lead to the compressor, depending on the type of AC you have. This is the first thing you should look for if you cannot determine why your AC is not performing as well as it used to.

If you cannot find any icing inside your AC unit, but it still under-performs, it is possible that the refrigerant has simply run out through normal use. Try to think when you changed it the last time. If it has been more than a year, it is quite possible that this has happened.

When dealing with AC units, you should only let trained and certified professionals perform repairs and maintenance. That is the only way to ensure that your AC will be safe and operational for years to come.
