What is difference between CBD and THC

Cannabis is a plant made up of hundreds of useful compounds as well as thousands of uses. One of the more popular uses is for its medicinal properties in the form of an oil. This oil-rich in cannabinoids works closely with our endocannabinoid system.

CBD ( cannabidiol ) and THC ( tetrahydrocannabinol ) are the two most popular cannabinoid compounds found in the cannabis plant. CBD is non-psychoactive and THC is psychoactive. For this reason, THC is well known for being high in cannabis but a few other cannabinoids also work together to process the psychoactive effects of cannabis. CBD on the other hand actually regulates and is known as an inhibitor cannabinoid. The therapeutic effects of CBD are in the ability to influence a wide range of different receptor systems throughout the body, not just the CB1 and CB2 receptors.

THC directly connects to these two receptors, similarly to a lock and key. The cannabinoid binds to either the CB1 receptor or the CB2 receptor. The cannabinoid receptors are found throughout our body and part of our endocannabinoid system, which is involved in a variety of physiological processes including appetite, pain management, mood, and memory. The CB1 receptor is mainly found throughout the central nervous system.  CB2 receptors are located in our immune systems and hematopoietic cells.

THC interacts with our body directly and CBD’s cannabinoid effects are exerted more indirectly through a process known as modulation. For instance, you can use CBD oil drops topically on your skin as cannabinoid receptors are found throughout our skin and muscles. Common effective therapeutic uses and benefits of CBD oil drops are as follows;  anti-anxiety, neuroprotective, anticonvulsant, anti-psychotic, anti-tumoral, painkiller and anti-inflammatory. THC on the other hand benefits in symptoms of relaxation, drowsiness, appetite stimulant, pain management, anti-emetic and as a muscle relaxant.

Interesting fact that there is a legal difference in THC and CBD, even though they both have medical and therapeutic benefits. Many people have taken advantage of CBD being produced form the hemp plant and imported the CBD oil drops from hemp producing countries. China is one of the largest producers of raw hemp for the past few yeats accountable for up to 25% of the worlds production. Eastern Europe is also a large cultivator of hemp and a lot of our CBD products are from these countries. CBD oil drops are usually imported as a dietary supplement and the DEA passed a ruling in 2016 to classify all cannabinoid extracts as a Schedule 1 drug, like THC. Federal Law is still one of the biggest challenges facing cannabis in today’s world. Luckily in 2018 more states and countries will be liberating the cannabis plant.

As one can see above, cannabis compounds work differently and assist patients differently for the many diseases and conditions it seems to benefit. One can use cannabis in many ways, oil drops, concentrates and more commonly the flower. The flower is generally used to smoke but also contains high volumes of CBD, THC and many of the other cannabinoids. Also check out this blog post: Best Way To Take CBD & How Much CBD Should I Take?
