You breathe in and out anywhere from 15 to 25 times per minute without even thinking about it. Take a deep breath and let it out. Take another, but this time, hold it as long as you can. Didn’t last long did you? Imagine taking that breath and not being able to breath out ever again. I believe air, what we need to survive no matter what, is something every one of us takes most for granted. It is easy to take for granted though. I mean, it is always around us.

I do not think I have ever had to worry about not being able to breath, except when I am swimming under water. Now what makes us able to breathe? Our lungs. They take a gas that your body needs to get rid of (carbon dioxide) and exchange it for a gas that your body can use (oxygen).  Now imagine being told you need new lungs to live. The only way to get your lungs is from a donor.

Right now 117,507 people are waiting for an organ. 18 people will die each day waiting for that organ. This is scary to think about isn’t it?

Why am I writing about our lungs? The other day my Dad told me a woman from his work needs a bilateral lung transplant. Her name is Joyce. She is a Nurse Practitioner, who treated me when I had a bad sinus infection. She made me better in no time and I never would have guessed what she was dealing with when I met her.

She is currently awaiting to have BOTH of her lungs transplanted from a donor. She has to be by a phone at all times, in case she gets that phone call. She only has a matter of a couple hours to get on a plane to a Hospital and into surgery. I could not even fathom what this would feel like.

She has a blog where she talks about her journey. Not only how it effects her, but also her son and husband. It is an eye-opening read. I never understood the meaning of donating organs and now I do. 1 organ donor can save up to 8 lives.

This is such a wonderful opportunity to make a difference. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes for 5 minutes. It is hard to imagine a different life that has struggles you would never think of. Joyce has put together a Facebook page telling about upcoming fundraisers, news, and events that will be occurring.

She also has T-Shirts to help her fundraiser. I bought 2 in grey and they are really cool! There are 3 colors to choose from: Grey, Green and White. One shirt is $15.00 each. Look at how neat these are for such a good cause:

She also is taking donations for her fundraiser. To donate, click this link and on the right side of the page will be an option to contribute

Everything helps. Do your good deed for the day and get involved. Spread the word about being a Donor. You are given one amazing life to live, so why not keep that gift of giving, by saving someone else’s life with your help?
