*Creme Brulee At Home*

Creme Brulee and Strawberry Cheesecake are my all time favorite desserts. So for Valentine’s Day, my boyfriend decided to make me Creme Brulee from scratch. I had no idea he was doing this until we got home from dinner and he surprised me. A couple weeks before, we were at the home improvement store and he bought a blow torch. I immediately asked why are you getting this?! He said he could not tell me, so I assumed it was for a do-it-yourself project he was going to start. Little did I know, it was my favorite dessert! I was so surprised, shocked and a little nervous when he announced he would be attempting to make this. I mean, neither of us have any experience with a blow torch, so I had the fire extinguisher ready at hand! This was a very simple recipe, perfect for first timers, such as ourselves. It was easy, had simple ingredients and turned out marvelous. I was surprised how trouble free and un-complicated this was to make. What really got me, was how it tasted exactly like creme brulee! Of course I had doubts, I assumed this is a hard dessert to make, but if you follow the directions step by step, it turns out divine. What really makes the dessert, is the top layer of sugar and browning it with the blow torch. This was one of the most genius ideas my boyfriend could think of, because now I get to have my favorite dessert anytime I want!

The Ingredients

Egg Yolks, Granulated Sugar, and Vanilla Extract

Mixture (Medium Size Heat Safe Bowl)

Your Impromptu Double Boiler!

Heat Safe Glass Dishes or Ramekins

 Propane Torching!

 Torched and Ready to Cool

 The Finished Product: Creme Brulee

Why Wait? Enjoy!

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 2 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Brown sugar / granulated sugar for topping

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Pour heavy whipping cream into a small saucepan and heat over the stove

In the Meantime:

  1. Beat egg yolks, 4 tablespoons granulated sugar, and vanilla extract in a medium size mixing bowl until thick and creamy
  2. Once the whipping cream is nearly at a boil (slow bubble), pour it into the medium size bowl mixture of egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla extract
  3. Mix the ingredients thoroughly
  4. Rinse out the saucepan that the cream was in and fill halfway with water…place over high heat until boiling
  5. Once the water is boiling, place the medium boil (assuming it is heat safe) on top of the pan to form an impromptu (see pictures) double boiler
  6. Mix the mixture on top thoroughly until it is consistent enough to coat the back of a spoon (you just used a Double Boiler! Without knowing it?)
  7. Pour the mixture into 4 to 6 ramekins (or oven safe glass dishes) and place into the 300 degree Fahrenheit oven
  8. Bake for 30 minutes
  9. Remove from the oven and let sit in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours
  10. Remove from the refrigerator and sprinkle generously with brown sugar and granulated sugar
  11. Use a propane torch (CAREFULLY) from a distance to brown and caramelize the sugar (you can also broil in the oven for 2 minutes if the torch doesn’t fancy you)
  12. Let sit for 2 minutes to cool and harden
  13. Enjoy!
